A. NUTRIENTS
Nutrients are chemicals that are needed by the body
to keep it in good health.

There are five nutrient groups:

1. Carbohydrates
2. Fats
3. Protein
4. Vitamins
5. Minerals
1. CARBOHYDRATES

Carbohydrates are made from the elements

carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
You can usually find carbohydrate in rice, corns,
breads, etc.
2. FATS
Fats are made of large numbers of carbon and
hydrogen atoms linked into long chains together with
a few oxygen atoms.

There are two kinds of fats:

a. Solid fats which comes from animals
b. Liquid fats which comes from plants
3. PROTEINS

Proteins are made from atoms of carbon,

hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.

Proteins can be found in fish, eggs, meats, and

soy products.
4. VITAMINS

Unlike the other nutrients, we only need a small

amount of Vitamins.

You can usually find vitamins from vegetables

and fruits.
5. MINERALS
The body needs twenty different minerals to
keep healthy. Some are needed in large
amounts, some are needed only a little.

Some examples of minerals are:

- Calcium - Amino
- Zinc - Glucose
B. HOW THE BODY USES NUTRIENTS

1. Carbohydrates are used as fuel to provide the

energy for keeping the body alive.
2.Fats are needed for the formation of cell
membranes. They also contain even larger
amounts of energy than carbohydrates.
3. Proteins are needed for building the
structures inside cells and in the
formation of tissues and organs.
4. Each vitamin has one or more uses in the body.
Vitamin A is involved in allowing the eyes to see in
dim light. Vitamin B is usually involved in avoiding
beriberi.

Lacking of Vitamin C causes deficiency disease

called scurvy.

Vitamin D helps the body take up calcium from

food to make strong bones and teeth.
5. Each mineral may have more than one
use. For example, calcium is needed to
make strong bones and teeth.

A lack of calcium in the diet can lead

to weak bones and high blood
pressures.
C. MALNUTRITION

Lack of nutrient in a diet may produce a deficiency

disease such as scurvy or anemia.

If the body is extremely overweight, it is described

as obesity.

If the body is extremely thin and have fear of eating

or gaining weight, it is described as anorexia
nervosa which can leads to death.
D. A HEALTHY DIET
 You can eat large amounts of potatoes, bread, rice
and pasta. They provide you with carbohydrates,
which supply the body with energy.

 You should eat a smaller amount of fruit and

vegetables (but still five portions a day) to provide
you with vitamins, minerals and fibre.

 You should eat a smaller amount still of foods such

as meat and fish, to provide you with the protein
you need for growth and repair of the body.
