Each section is scored out of 30 points and then combined
for a total TOEFL score out of 120. READING Your main task is to read passages and answer questions about them. 700 words 3 or 4 passages Passages deal with a variety of academic topics, from history and art to science and psychology. Each passage also comes with 12-14 questions. It’s important to manage your time wisely. Types of reading: multiple choice, inserting a sentence, reading to learn (arrange the main points of the passage). Tips for Attacking the TOEFL Reading Pattern 1. Learn to manage the time: • Read a passage : about 5 minutes. • Answer a question : about 1 minute each. • Complete a question set : about 15 minutes in total. • Total passage + question set : about 20 minutes 2. Choose a passage reading strategy a head of time: • Read the entire passage first (recommended). • Skim the passage and then answer the questions. • Answer the questions paragraph by paragraph. • Read the questions first (not recommended). 3. Skip difficult questions and return to them later. Even if you have to guess, it’s better to choose a random answer than to choose nothing at all since there are no penalties for wrong answers on the TOEFL. LISTENING SECTION You’ll listen to four to six lectures and two to three conversations. Lecture : 3-5 minutes with 6 questions Conversation : 3 minutes with 5 questions Types : multiple choice, multiple answer (you may select more than one answer choice), replay. Tips for Attacking The TOEFL Listening Pattern. 1. Take a notes as you listen (you only get to hear the clips once except on replay questions). Unlike the reading section, you can’t skip around or go back to previous question or clips. 2. Pay close attention to replay questions (the answer to the question will be in this part of the clips specifically, so there’s no need to go through your notes on the whole lecture or conversation). 3. Read questions and answer choices carefully (don’t just choose the first answer choice that sounds right–take time to understand what each answer choice means, and then choose the one that most clearly and accurately answer the question). Listening 1. Short Dialogues (Part A): • 2 Baris percakapan • Sebuah pertanyaan yang dibacakan oleh native speaker. • Jawab pertanyaan dari 4 pilihan jawaban • 30 dialog dan 30 pertanyaan. 2. Long Conversation (Part B): • Percakapan 2 orang native speaker, topic berhubungan dg student • 2-3 Percakapan • 2-3 Pertanyaan • 7-9 Soal yang harus dijawab. 3. Talks (Part C): • Pembicaraan oleh seorang dosen, topic bersifat akademik • 3 Pembicaraan yang setiap satunya memiliki 3-4 pertanyaan. • 11-13 soal yang harus dikerjakan. Assefa Hornby, A. S. 1987.
