“Giving” In The

Scriptures
Introduction
In this present dispensation of Grace, God’s
words are His purposes that are entrusted
to the church which is His body in general.
These purposes are worship, fellowship,
instruction, and evangelism, and in this
purposes originated.
Introduction
The responsibility to carry out these purposes is
given to the believers. It is duty and obligation
to support to accomplish these ministry. God’s
works must be supported in God’s way through
His people. To support means to provide for the
needs of these ministries. And this is commonly
called DOCTRINE OF GIVING.
GIVING
Giving is the act of setting aside something for us in
the ministries and purposes of God. This refers to
anything and all things that are set apart for God. The
truth of giving, like some other truths in the Bible, is
revealed progressively or gradually in the scriptures.
God reveals some aspects of some truths one at a
time, and this is also true in the doctrine of giving as
it is found in the Scriptures.
GIVING BEFORE THE LAW
Truths in the Scriptures were revealed mostly by
direct revelation from God. But there are truths
also that were revealed by implication or
intimation. Implication is the act of indicating a
meaning not expressed. Intimation is the act of
making known without direct statement. This
fact is true also of giving..
GIVING IN THE DISPENSATION OF
INNOCENCE
In the Garden of Eden, giving is intimated or implied in the
command of God to Adam, (Gen 2:15-17). Adam was
prohibited to eat of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge
without telling him the reason. He was only told by the Lord
God of consequence of disobedience. For sure, we can say
that the Tree of Knowledge is not for man’s use and
consumption. Adam was to set aside the said tree for God’s
possession and purposes and that is an implication of giving.
GIVING IN THE DISPENSATION OF
CONSCIENCE
After the fall of man, giving is implied or
intimated by the Lord God in the making of
coats of animal skins to cover Adam and Eve in
their nakedness, (Gen 3:21). At this instance, the
Lord God had set an example to them, for man
to be acceptable to Him, He had to offer animal
sacrifices.
GIVING IN THE DISPENSATION OF
CONSCIENCE
And this was demonstrated by Abel through
his offering of animal sacrifices, (Gen 4:4)
Abel’s offering was accepted by God
because it was done according toe God’s
will. Offering is a form of giving.
GIVING IN THE DISPENSATION OF
HUMAN GOVERNMENT
At the start of this dispensation, when Noah and his
family came out of the ark, he built an altar unto the
Lord, and offered burnt offering from the clean
animals he had brought along in the ark, (Gen 8:20).
Noah’s action here suggest that an offering or giving
is an integral part of worship. This fact demonstrated
by Abraham when he was asked to offer his son,
Isaac, as a burnt offering, (Gen 22:3-6)
GIVING IN THE DISPENSATION OF
HUMAN GOVERNMENT
Wise men from the east demonstrated also the fact that offering or giving is an
essential act of worshipping God when they visited the Lord Jesus Christ, (Matt
2:11)

The Apostle Paul instructed believers today that we are to offer our bodies a
living sacrifices to God (Roman 12:1). The word, “SERVICE” in this verse is
LATREAI, a noun which means a ministration of God, example worship. The verb
form of LATREUO and it is translated as worship in Act 7:42, 24:14, Phil 3:3, and
Hebrew 10:2. Base on the [receding facts, offering and giving is inseparable from
worship. Our worship to God is not complete without giving. It is an integral part
of WORSHIP.
GIVING IN THE DISPENSATION OF
PROMISE
During this dispensation, Abram later known as Abraham offered burnt offerings
(Gen 22:1-13). The first act of giving the tithe was done by Abram. He gave his
tithes to Milchizedek, the priest of the Most High God, (Gen 14:19-20, Heb 7:1-2)
Abram gave his tithes in compliance and obedience to the voice and
commandments of the Lord God. This truth is proved by the statement of God
Himself to Isaac regarding Abraham, (Gen 26:5).
GIVING IN THE DISPENSATION OF
PROMISE
There is a great probability that Jacob gave his tithe also because of the
instruction of his grandfather Abraham, (Gen 28:22, 18:17-19). The Scripture is
silent as to whom Jacob gave his tithes. But I believed that Jacob gave his tithe to
a priest as what his grandfather Abraham did. Jacob offered sacrifices and drink
offering also, (Gen 31:53, 25:14, 46:1). Sacrifices is another term for giving. In
this period, there were three kinds of giving in effect namely: the burn offering,
the tithing, and the drink offering. And these three offering were carried over
and incorporated into the Law given by God through Moses for the people.
GIVING IN THE DISPENSATION OF
PROMISE
From the Garden of Eden up to this time, before the Law of Moses was given,
you will never find any direct command to make offering and to give the tithes.
Yet the people of God, from Abel down to Jacob did things that we know now
are all in accord with the will of god. What we have is the testimony of God
Himself that Abraham did things in obedience to His voice.
GIVING DURING THE LAW
During the dispensation of the Law, besides the tithes and the drink offering,
God reveals varios kinds of burn offerings. There is the peace offering (Ecodus
20:24), sin offering (Ex 29:14), weave offering (Ex 29:24), heave offering (Ex
29:28), meat offering (Ex 29:41) trespass offering (Lev 5:6), freewill offering (Lev
22:18), thanksgiving offering (Lev 22:29), jealousy offering (Num 5:18), daily
offering (Num 28:3), monthly offering (Num 28:14), Sabbath offering (num 28:3),
to some of them.
