Egyptian, Greek, and Roman


5000 BC to 300 AD
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN
• ART was expressed in paintings and sculpture and was
both highly stylized and symbolic.
• Art with an afterlife focus and preservation of
knowledge in the past.
• Mush surviving art comes from tombs, and monuments
• Tombs served as a shelter for the next journey
• Major monumental structures such as the great
pyramids and the sphinx reflect those beliefs
EGYPTIAN ART
• Their art includes painting, culture on wood, stone and
ceramics, drawings on papyrus, jewelries, ivories,
• Their arts reached a high level in painting and sculpture,
and was both highly stylized and symbolic.
Purposes of Ancient Egyptian Art
•Ceremonial- most of their art was used for
religious purposes that dealt with the
afterlife and the gods.
•Narrative- Hieroglyphics that told stories of
everyday life.
•Functional- sarcophagus held dead, vases
held organs.

ANCIENT GREEK ART
• It began in the Cycladic and Minoan civilization
and gave birth to Western classical art in the
ancient period.
• The Greeks believed in living the perfect life. They
believed that a variety of gods and goddesses
controlled different aspects of every person
destiny on earth. As a result, lots of buildings and
work of arts were created to please their different
gods and give people places to worship.
FOUR GREEK ART PERIODS
• GEOMETRIC – This period showed how ancient artist adorned many of
their works. (Vase painting) with precise geometric patterns.
• ARCHAIC – Greek artist came into contact with ideas and styles from
outside of Greece. It was also a time when vase painting and sculpture
began to reflect Greek ideals.
• CLASSICAL – Referred as Greek’s golden age. It was the time of
perfection was achieve in arts. The Parthenon was constructed during
this time.
• HELLENISTIC – New ideas permeated Greek art, and emotion and drama
and realism began to influence the appearance. Sculpture is the common
art work.
ROMANS
• Highly sophisticated society
• Powerful civilization and dominated the entire
western world
• Created empire, and absorbed cultures from
those they conquered
• In painting and sculpture, the Romans often
borrowed from and imitated the Greeks.
• Architecture was their biggest contribution in arts
ROMAN ARTS
• It includes architecture, painting, sculpture and
mosaic work.
• Art was characterized by statue, frescoes, and
design with vine motifs.
• Sculpture was considered the highest form of Art
but figure painting was also highly regarded.

ARCHITECTURE
• They invented and use arches
• The development of arch eliminated the need
for columns.
• Buildings had vast interior space
• Buildings were impressive because of their size
and practically rather than aesthetic feeling.
