• It offers a series of basic activities to boys, which
will help them to develop their physical, moral, social and spiritual well-being and have fun while doing it.
• As each boy progresses, he will come to realize
that he is capable of undertaking increasingly difficult skills and certain responsibilities towards other people.
• Most important of all, his progress is recognized by
the award of a badge. PRINCIPLES OF SCOUT ADVANCEMENT
• The boy is encouraged to compete
• Advancement should happen as a result of experience • Opportunity to practice requirements • Scout ranks represents Scout’s degree of qualification • Application of Scout Skills • Fun, enjoyable and has a definite end • It is only a means to an end as the objective is not to produce Eagle Scouts, but men of character, trained for responsible citizenship. THE BADGE SYSTEM 1. Produce boys of character, trained for citizenship, and service to others. 2. Give chance even to the dullest boy 3. Recognize what a boy is able to do. 4. Capture the boy’s interest 5. Allow the boy progress on his own 6. Provide a new type of competition SECTIONAL SCOUTING AGE AND EDUCATIONAL LEVEL The Unit Leader must always remember: • Not all boys are in the same rank; SOME MAY HAVE JUST JOINED SCOUTING WHILE SOME ARE IN THEIR HIGHEST ADVANCEMENT RANK • Not all boys know a certain skills; In some cases, ONLY ONE BOY KNOWS A CERTAIN SKILL (The boy must teach his fellow scouts in order to help them know the skill or advance to the next rank) ROLE OF ADULTS IN PROMOTING SCOUT ADVANCEMENT There are only 4 main roles of adults in Scout Advancement: 1.) The Unit Leader must remember that the Badge
System must be: • Discussed to parents to fully understand what their children are doing • A way for a Scout's family to create a Scouting hobby or strong bond • DEVELOP SCOUTS PERSONAL ATTITUDE REMEMBER
“Scouting is not ONLY FOR THE BOYS,
BUT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. Therefore, the moral and financial support provided by the UNIT LEADER AND PARENT greatly influences a boy in attainment of his desired ADVANCEMENT RANK” Something to think about… Words from the founder…
“Merit Badges are established
with a view to develop in each lad the task for hobbies or handicrafts, one of which may ultimately give him a career and not leave him hopeless on going out into the world…” THANK YOU! Boy Scouts of the Philippines Eastern Mindanao Region Davao City Council
