FILE AND FOLDER MANAGEMENT

OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupil will be able to:

1. Define a file and folder.


2.Create folder.
3.Move files into folders using copy and paste/cut and paste method or the drag and drop
method.
4. Understand the differences between files and folders.
5. State the similarities between files and folders
WHAT IS A FILE

File is a collection of related information stored


with a unique name
on the computer.
It is a document created with an application on
the computer by the user. A file is created with
an application and takes the
colour of the application by default.
WHAT IS FOLDER

Folder is a container of files,


programs/applications and other folders.
A folder is yellow in colour by
default and has a size of 0 bytes. It occupies
no space on the hard drive
of the computer.
HOW TO CREATE A FOLDER

1. Right click on an empty space on the desktop


2. Point to New on the pop up menu.
3. Click on Folder on the sub menu.
4. Type the name of the folder.
5. Press Enter key / Click any blank space on the
desktop.
NB: by default it named new folder so you can change it to
the name you want.
MOVING FILE INTO FOLDER

NB: Copy-and-Paste duplicates the original file


but Cut-and-Paste removes the original file and
pastes it at another / intended location.

Drag and Drop is the process of clicking on an


item without releasing your finger and then move
the item to another location before releasing your
finger.

Right click on the file


Click Copy on the pop up menu.
Right click on the destination folder.
Click Paste on the pop up menu.

1. Right click on the file


2. Click Cut on the pop up menu.
3. Right click on the destination folder.

How to Drag and Drop a File into a Folder

1. Click on the file you want to move without


releasing your finger on the mouse button.
2. Move / drag the mouse to the location / folder
where you want the file to be.
3. Release your finger on the mouse button.
HOW TO RENAME A FOLDER

1. Right click on the folder


2. Click on rename on the pop up menu
3. Type the new name of the folder
4. Press the Enter key
OR
5. Select / highlight the folder
6. Press F2 on the keyboard
7. Type the new name of the folder
8. Press the Enter key or click on an empty space
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
