INTRODUCTION

• The ship’s pumping systems are necessary for the operation

of the ship. There are different systems on a ship. These
include the Fuel Oil System, Cooling Systems, Lubricating
Oil Systems, Sewage System, Domestic Water System, Steam
Supply System, Bilge System, and Ballast system.
PUMPING SYSTEM

• The engines A viscosity at the fuel injectors of between 13 and 17 cSt is needed for
effective engine operation and so the fuel must be heated before it is delivered to the
fuel injection pumps. The temperature to which it is heated depends upon the initial
viscosity of the fuel. A viscosity-temperature chart is provided so that the heating
temperature can be determined for any fuel of known viscosity directly and adjusts
the heating accordingly so there should be no need for the engineer to intervene.
However, knowing what the heating temperature should be allows the engineer to
check the functioning of the viscosity controller and enables manual intervention,
should the viscosity controller malfunction.
BILGE SYSTEM

• The bilge main is arranged to pump the bilges from the

bilge well to the bilge holding tank. All bilge suctions must
be fitted with suitable strainers, which in the machinery
space would be mud boxes positioned at the floor plate level
for easy access. A vertical drop pipe would lead down to the
bilge wells for easy suction.
BILGE SYSTEM

• The emergency bilge suction or bilge injection

valve is used to prevent flooding of the ship. It is a
direct suction from the machinery space bilge which
is connected to the largest capacity pump or pumps.
BILGE SYSTEM

• The basic bilge system component are the bilge pump a

reciprocating used to transfer bilge from bilge well to the
bilge or to the oily water separator. In the oily water
separator the oil is separated from the water in the process
of gravitational force.
BILGE INJECTION VALVE

• Both these types of emergencies (fire and flooding) involve

the use/role of sea water. If there is a fire, sea water is the
biggest resource of water available in the sea. Similarly if it
involves flooding of the engine room, cargo spaces or any
other place on the ship for that matter; you would again
require pumping the sea water out of the ship. In both these
cases you require pumps.
PURPOSE OF THE SYSTEM

• To transfer bilge’s from bilge well by bilge pump.

And to transfer LO drain from stuffing box drain tank,
and scavenging drain tank to sludge tank by bilge
and sludge pump
MAJOR COMPONENTS

 Bilge pump
A reciprocating type pump used to transfer bilge from bilge well (forward port side,
forward starboard side, center aft, and aft side) to bilge tank or to oily water
separator.

 Bilge and sludge pump

Screw type pumps used to transfer bilge’s and sludge from stuffing box drain tank,
and scavenging drain tank to sludge
SLUDGE PUMP
• As the name implies, a sludge pump processes and moves waste fluids with high-
solid content. Because sludge and slurry pumps have similar operations, people
often use the names interchangeably. Due to the type of material that these pumps
move, they must have an extremely high-powered mechanism. After all, sludge is not
only heavy, but it can also contain corrosive or volatile content. As the name implies,

OILY WATER SEPARATOR

• Separate oil from water in the process of

gravitational force. Separate oil is transfer to
waste oil tank and water that passed in oily water
alarm (15 ppm) will discharge overboard.
EMERGENCY BILGE SYSTEM

In case of engine room flooding, ballast pump is equipped

with an emergency bilge suction valve. Suction is taken directly from the
engine room tank top plating and discharged overside. The open end of the
pipework is protected by a suction filter that must be inspected periodically
and kept clear of all debris. Operation of the valve is by manipulation of an
extended spindle valve and is clearly identified with red lettering on its brass
tally plate and is located for easy operation.
BALLAST SYSTEM

 Purposed of the system

To supply seawater for emergency fire fighting, coolers, deck wash,

de ballasting, ballasting, and bilge discharging
MAJOR COMPONENTS CONTRIBUTION TO THE
PURPOSE OF THE SYSTEM

• Fire and general service pump

• A vertical centrifugal pump used to transfer seawater for cooling, ballasting, de
ballasting, and other general services.
• Fire bilge and ballast pump
• A vertical centrifugal pump, adjacent to fire and general service pump which main
used is for ballasting and de ballasting
• Sea chest (port and starboard side)
• Covered hole compose of strainer were seawater is drawn up.
• Strainers
• Fitted inside of the sea chest used to trap foreign substances,
which cause damage to the pumps.
• Pressure gauge
• Used to measure pressure in discharge side of the pumps.
• Compound gauge
• Used to measure pressure in suction side of the pumps.
CARGO PUMPING SYSTEM

• hydraulically driven submerged cargo pumps provide safe, efficient

and flexible cargo handling of any type of liquid cargo. Improved cargo
handling performance gives quicker turnaround time, more ton-miles
and fewer voyages in ballast.
SUBMERGED CARGO PUMPING

More than a half-century after we introduced it, the Framo

submerged cargo pump is still a unique solution. It has the
ability to pump any type of liquid cargo, no matter how
sensitive or viscous.
CARGO PUMPING SYSTEM

• cargo pump is a vertical single-stage centrifugal pump

powered by a hydraulic motor for safe and efficient
operation. All of our cargo pumps are made in stainless steel
and designed with a smooth and easy-to-clean surface
featuring a limited number of flanges for a superior ability to
pump any liquid.
DESIGN FEATURES
• Vertical single stages, single suction impeller, axially balance
- Robust hydraulic drive with short and stiff drive shaft
- Fail-safe design; lubrication and cooling of pump by the hydraulic driving oil
medium.
- Pump material stenless steel
- Concentric hydraulic pipes for maximum safety
- Cofferdam, ventilated to atmosphere, protecting the entire pump
- Mechincal seal against hydraulic oil
- Double lip seal against cargo, only exposed to static pressure
- Anti-rotation brake; loading through pump
- Smooth pump exterior; self draining and easy to clean
