Sharp and clean eraser
Drawing metal requires careful
attention to small details.

Special feature:
They produce more glossy
reflections.
Metal effects are characterized
by the material’s property, that
light is strongly reflected.

Reflections appears extremely

white (you can use eraser).

Has many levels of tones:

Shades, half-shades,
reflected light and highlights.

High contrast of values

next to each other.

Shadow / shades
Spoon has simple shape and
usually glossy, so it is a good
object to practice drawing metal
with.

As with any drawing, you will

need to start with a basic outline
of your object.

Create a solid outline, but make

sure your line is light and easily
to be erased if needed.
This is the most tricky part of
the entire process. To create the
illusion of metal, you will need to
focus all your attention on
drawing them EXACTLY as you
see them.

Record every little shapes.

Outline the contours of the

highlights, shadows and
reflections.
Understand how light behaves
on shiny objects.

The reflections are going to

contour to the shape of the
object:
Bend if the object is rounded.

It’s how this glossy surface will

give volume to the object.
What makes metal look so shiny,
is the contrast that it shows
(i.e. very light color next to very
dark color, and crisp clean lines).

Work from light to dark:

Focus on the brightest areas of
the object and continue on to
the darker ones.
For the brightest parts of the
spoon, don’t fill in any pencil at
all.

Try to shade evenly to enhance

the illusion that this spoon is a
smooth surface.
Note!
 Object proportion
 ‘invisible’ outline

 Contrast, next to each other

 Shades = dark
Half shades = medium dark
Reflected light = medium light
Highlight = white

 To look glossy,
Highlight = white
(erase if necessary)
