CATHOLICS BELIEF IN BAPTISM

• One of seven sacraments in the Catholic Church that is celebrated


• It is an initiation rite that involves water
• Without being baptized, one cannot receive the other seven sacraments in the Catholic
Church
• Through baptism Catholics are baptized as priest, prophet, and king
• It is through baptism that you become a member of the Catholic Church
• Baptism is believed to leave an permanent mark on the soul

• Both adults and infants can be baptized


• Baptism forgives sins, grants spiritual rebirth, and makes one a member of the church
• Godparents are selected to represent the children
• Baptism is performed by “Ordinary ministers” which are bishops, priests, and some
deacons
• Uses the Trinitarian formula

• The Catholic Church accepts baptisms from other churches


• Catholics believe that baptism is a gift from God to humanity
• Baptism is believed to be connected to faith
• It is believed that through baptism all sins are forgive, both original and personal sin

BAPTISTS BELIEF ON BAPTISM

• Baptism is an initiation rite that involves water


• Baptists believe that in order to be baptized you must be fully immersed in the water
• Total immersion in water symbolizes this death, burial and resurrection of Jesus
• Baptists reject the idea of baptizing infants
• Baptists believe you must be an adult to fully understand what is happening
• Baptists claim there is no mention of infant baptism in the Bible

• Baptism symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus that has made salvation
possible
• Bible teaches that baptism symbolizes that a person has been saved
• Baptism is not essential for salvation

• Do not need godparents since their role is to speak for the children being baptized
• The rite uses water and invocation of the Trinity
• In most churches, it is the pastor who performance this ordinance
• Baptists respect the right of others to baptize in whatever way they choose

• Baptism is an initiation rite that involves water
• Adults and infants can be baptized
• Believe that baptism bestows the state of being Christian on that person through
salvation and rebirth
• Blesses the infant with divine grace and Church protection

• Godparents are selected to represent the child at baptism


• The Anglican Church believes that pouring, sprinkling or immersion are all acceptable
forms of baptism
• Baptism is performed by the priest in the church
• Baptism gives the individual a ”fresh” start and gives access to God’s grace
• Need for baptism as a sign of welcoming into the church

CONCLUSION

While there are similarities and differences between Catholicism and the two
denominations that I choose, their beliefs are all important. Their beliefs are all valid and at
the core of these religions, they have more similarities than they do differences. All
Christians share some common beliefs, but it is natural for people to disagree, have
different beliefs and different opinions. Having various secs of Christianity is important
because individuals are able to find a belief system that fits with them as opposed to before
the Reformation when all Christians were Catholics.
