• Means of vertical transportation.

• Should provide easy, quick & safe mode of
communication between the floors.
1. LOCATION :
• Easy access to occupants of building.
• Should be well lighted & ventilated.
• Should be convenient and spacious.

• The pitch of the stairs should match with the
French Theory.
• French Theory:-" The labour of moving vertically
is about twice that of moving horizontally, if the
avg. Human stride is taken as 23 inches.
• Inches : 2× rise+ going= 23°
• Cm: 2× rise+ going= 60°
5. Head Room :-
• Distance between tread & soffit of the flight
immediately above it should not be less than
2.1 to 2.3 m.

• A balustrade is a row of small columns topped by a
rail.
• Should be always provided to open well stairs for
safety of users.
7. STEP DIMENSIONS :-
• Dimensions of rise and going should be such
that the users should be comfortable with it.
• Optimum proportion so as to provide
desirable pitch of the stairs.
• Going should not be less than 25 cm.
• Rise should be between 10-15 cm.
• Width of landing should not be less than width
of stairs.
8. MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION :
• Should possess required qualities as per
condition.
• The material used for construction of stairs
should be such as to provide :-
