SAFETY IN ELECTRICAL
INSTALLATION
General Safety
SAFETY RULES
• Safety is an important aspect in the use of
electrical appliances
• May result in accidents and injuries as well as
damage to property and loss of life
• 3 categories of safety ;
A) Personal safety
B) Safety of tools and equipment
C) Workshop safety and enviroment
(A) PERSONAL SAFETY
1. Clothing
- Wear attire that is suitable
- Wear insulated shoes
- Do not wear any jewellery
- Do not wear neckties
2. Attitude
- Follow instructions
- Report all malfunctions of equipment
- Use right tools
- Plan your activities before work
3. Physical Condition
- Physically fit
- Not sleepy
- Have good eyesight
- Have good hearing
(B) SAFETY OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS
1. Insulation
- Protecting, covering and isolating electrical conductor
to prevent the electrical current from flowing
- Material used as an insulator must be high
resistance such as rubber and PVC
2. Earthing
- Connecting metal parts in electrical circuit to the
ground.
- Prevent user from electrical shock when current
leakage to any metal parts
3. Protective devices
- Disconnecting the circuit when there is an overflow of
current
- Using fuse and circuit breaker
(C) WORKSHOP SAFETY AND
ENVIROMENTS
• Equipment and furniture are safety
• Enough lighting
• Neat and clean
• Minimise of noise
• Prevent doorways from blocked
• Complete and save PPE
• Clear instruction or SOP
Safety in Wiring Lab
• Obey the signage and work
instructions given by
instructors in the lab.
• Always wear a pair of safety
shoes when enter the lab.
(slippers or sandals are not
allowed!!)
• Wear suitable costume and
Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) for
wiring/installation job.
Safety in Wiring Lab
• Use a test pen for
electrical current
absence testing under
500V life line.
Screw driver is not
! a tester!!
• Don’t touch any bare
life parts or conductor
lines when the current
is supplied!!
Safety in Wiring Lab
• Use an appropriate Fire
Extinguisher when fire
happened and follow the firing
procedure.
NEVER WORK ON
EQUIPMENT WITH THE
POWER TURNED ON!

Points to remember
• Never take for granted that a circuit is ‘dead’.
Use test pen for confirmation.
• Always disconnect power supply if want to
leave even for a short while
• Keep the tools and equipment in good
working order.
