INTRODUCTION

• Piled rafts are hybrid foundation comprising a raft and

piles.
• This system can act as a settlement reducer.
INTRODUCTION… CONTD

• When raft is subjected to non-uniform loadings, piles of

different diameters and lengths may be required to prevent
the foundation from rotating to reduce the differential
settlement.
OBJECTIVE

• To analyse piled rafts with piles of different lengths and

diameters by finite layer method .

• To study differential settlement under non uniform loading .

• To study interactions between raft-soil-pile.

SCOPE

• Study of piled rafts and its suitability as a foundation

technique.

• Suggest its suitability in different types of soil through finite

layer method.
METHODOLOGY

• Analysis - by a combination of finite layer & finite element

methods

• The soil is divided into horizontal layers with different

material properties

• The raft is subjected to external forces and contact

stresses between piles or soil & raft.
METHODOLOGY…CONTD

(i) Pile-to-Pile – deflection of an unloaded pile due to an

adjacent loaded pile
(ii) Pile-to-Soil – deflection of the soil surface due to a loaded
pile
(iii) Soil-to-Pile – deflection of a pile due to the loaded soil
surface
(iv) Soil-to-Soil – deflection of the soil surface due to another
loaded area on the soil surface
