When and why do we order adjectives?
• Adjective tells us more and gives us extra information about something. (grammar rules)
• An adjective can be attributive, green house, predicative, he seems good, or
postpositive, there are plenty of rooms available.
• Adjectives make sentences more interesting and add spice to writing. (grammar rules)
• Jason gave me a piercing look before he shut the open
• The Titanic was a great movie, but it was long and sad!
• Lauren has excellent managerial skills and is a superb listener.
When and why do we order adjectives?

• In descriptive writing or whenever we want to paint a picture in receiver’s mind,

we make the scene as touchable as possible by adding as much adjectives as we
need.
• However, ignoring or making mistakes in the order of adjectives results in both
ambiguity of our writing and disheartening and losing our audience.
• To avoid mistakes, we must know that multiple adjectives describing a noun can
be either of the same (coordinate) or different (cumulative) categories.
Ordering Coordinate Adjectives
• When we use two adjectives of the same category, we use “and” in between.
• Ex: white and red car
• Or: red and white car
• When we use more than two adjectives of the same category, we use “comma”
between all except the two lasts.
• Ex: we have two, three, four and five rooms building.
• The stupid, pointless, frustrating homework assignment.
Ordering Cumulative Adjectives
• However, when we use multiple adjectives of different types, the position of
an adjective depends on what type of adjective it is.
• Is the adjective describing the noun’s appearance?
• Is it telling you the quantity of the noun?
• Is it telling you what the noun is made of ?
• All of these factors will influence the adjective’s position.

How to Choose Adjectives Wisely

using too many adjectives gives off a very confusing message to readers and
listeners, too.
• To prevent confusion, focus on learning the position of each type so that when
you do need one, you know exactly where to put it.
