Blood bank services(BTS) in a hospital refers to the

entire gamut of activities which results in proper collection of
blood from voluntary donors, processing of the same ,including
mandatory check for certain transmissible diseases and final issue
of safe blood for therapeutic use in patients.

Drug and Cosmetic Act.
Functions:

1. Selection of voluntary donors to determine


suitability for donation history.
2. Blood collection in an aseptic manner in the
bleeding room .
3. Screening of collected blood.
4. Component preparation.
5. Optimum storage of blood and blood products
6. Record keeping
7. Training of staff
Location:
The ideal location for the blood transfusion services is on
the ground floor with prominent signages for donors and
patients/attendants. It should be close to accident and
emergency services and hematology department(if
available in the hospital).A proper access with ample
parking space definitely adds more appeal to donors.

Building should have proper construction to
prevent entry of insects , rodents and flies.
Walls floors should be smooth, washable and
capable of being kept clean easily.
 The blood bank should have an area of
100mtr.sqr. for its operation &additional area of
50mtr.sqr. For preparation for blood
components.
 Doors should be wide (1800 mm)
Central air-conditioning is recommended in large, in
smaller units individual (split/window) is enough to
maintain temp. between 20 -25 degree C.
