Red Blood Cells

Blood “the river of life” carries substances between the cell and
external environment.

The average adult has about 5 liters of blood.

Blood is a connective tissue.

Plasma is the fluid matrix.

Blood cells and Platelets are the formed elements of the tissue.
Plasma - 55%.
Blood Cells - 45%.

Human Body
Red Blood Cells

Red blood cells (RBC), also known as Erythrocytes, comprise 99

percent of all blood cells.

These tiny cells are specialized to carry oxygen.

They have bi-concave shape to increase the surface area for gas
exchange.

Human Body
Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)

The blood's red colour is due to the spectral properties of the

hemic iron ions in haemoglobin.

The red blood cells of an average adult human male store

collectively about 2.5 grams of iron, representing about 65% of
the total iron contained in the body.

When matured, these cells live in blood circulation for about 100 to
120 days.

Human Body
Platelets

Life span of circulating 5 - 9 days.

The physiologic range of platelets is 150 – 400 x 10 9 per liter.

Platelets play a fundamental role in:

-Homeostasis.
-A natural source of Growth Factor.
