Carbon Compounds

Why carbon is special among

other elements?
•Carbon is the only element that
can form so many different
compounds because each
carbon atom can form four
chemical bonds.
Organic Compounds
Organic compounds are group of compounds
that contain the element carbon. Organic
compounds contain carbon and hydrogen
combined with other elements.
Examples: Oxygen, Nitrogen, ethyl alcohol,
gasoline, acetic acid and etc.
These kind of compounds are produced by
plants and animals.
However, these carbon-containing
compounds can also be produced
artificially.
Examples: organic compounds
produced from petroleum, LPG,
kerosene, lubricating oil and etc.
Uses of

Activity 1:
Organic Compounds and
Their Uses
Methane
Black in colour, in making motor tyre and printing ink,
in the production of light and energy, in making methyl
alcohol, formaldehyde and chloroform etc.

Butane
In liquid state it is used as LPG fuel.

Ethylene
In fruit ripening and fruits preservator.
Polythene
It used for the producing electrical resistance in wires and
cables, in making layer in the cap of the bottle in the
production of non-crackable bottles, pipes, buckets etc.

Polystyrene
Is used for the production of caps of bottles of acid.

Ethyl bromine
It is for making local anaesthesia.
Formament
In making medicine of throats in making chewing tablets.
Glycerol
It is used for making nitro-glycerine, in cleaning the components of
watches, in ink of stamp, in shoes polish and cosmetics, in
transparent soaps, in pain reliever medicines of any fractured part
of the body organs, in sweets, wine and fruits preservators etc.
Ethyl acetate
In making medicines, artificial perfumes etc.
Carbon-tetrachloride
In the form of fire extinguisher.
What are organic compounds?
•These are compounds that contain the
element carbon. These kind of
compounds are produced by plants and
animals example are ethyl alcohol, sugar,
and acetic acid. But some of them were
produced artificially like LPG, gasoline,
lubricating oil, and kerosene.
GASOLINE

-Fuel for
vehicle
KEROSENE

Used to removed Used for portable

Fuel for lamps (gasera)
paints cooking stove
LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)

Fuel for cars Fuel for gas stove

ETHANOL

Used as main ingredient

Use as disinfectant in liquors
ACETONE

-used to
removed
nail polish
ACETIC ACID

Can be used to treat Used as component of

fungal infection vinegar (4% by volume)
•Why do you think these kinds
of organic compounds are
very important?
•These common organic
compounds are very
important because they have
many uses at home and in
the industry.
Properties of
Organic Compounds
Odor

-is
the smell
of the
compound
Viscosity
-is a measure of a
fluid’s resistance to
flow. If the viscosity
is high, the flow of
the liquid is slow or
the liquid is thick.
Volatility
-isthe measure
of the tendency
of substance to
evaporate or to
turn into
gaseous state.
Flammability
-is
the
measure of
how easily a
material burns
Why is it important to know the
properties of these kinds of organic
compounds?
•It is important to have knowledge
about the properties of these
compounds so people will be
aware of their behavior, uses, and
effects on people.
