Bureaucracy (ex: certification) is considered more important than Qualification Teacher Recruitment Issues
•The teacher should have “O” level French, but the
ones who have it are not always the most willing or confident.
•Teachers with “O” level French had done little or no
talking in their own French Course at school, but had been mainly involved in writing and translating.
•Even if the teachers are certified, they may lack of
experience in teaching primary school students. Teacher Training Why is the training needed?
•Teacher must be competent enough
linguistically and professionally to be able to deviate from the prescribed book.
•The effect of using teachers who lack confidence
and competence will make them over-dependent on and vulnarable to a prescriptive course book. Colleges of Education • Offers a balance of academic and professional input, developing trainees’ skills in French and their teaching skills alongside each other
• Supervision from tutors in the training for
students who will teach French. “The Primary French” Project
• The pilot scheme tried to organise
experimental schools so that secondary schools would recruit children with similar backgrounds.
• Not all of those who would be significantly
affected were represented in the planing. Failure of The Project The scheme was not teacher-led nor needs- led. It chances of being perceived as successful would have been greater if French had been needed in the primary school and the effectiveness of pupils’ learning could have been measured in relation to that need.
