SO WHAT EXACTLY IS FACTORIZATION?

FACTORIZATION is the process of

expressing an algebraic expression as the
product of two or more algebraic
expressions.
FACTORIZATION IS THE
OPPOSITE OF EXPANSION!
EXPANSION: Sum of

BEFORE WE LEARN ABOUT
COMMON MONOMIAL FACTOR…
What is Greatest Common Factor(GCF)?
•The greatest common factor of two numbers is
the greatest integer that is a factor of both
numbers. For example, the GCF of 30 and 48 is 6.
Sol.
•30= 2 * 3 * 5
•48= 2 * 3 * 8
30 and 48 have a factor of 2 and 3 in
common, so the greatest common
factor of 30 and 48 would be 2*3=6
COMMON MONOMIAL FACTOR
•The process is similar when you are asked
to find the greatest common factor of two
or more monomials.
For example:
•36y7 = 2 * 3 * 6 * y * y * y * y * y * y * y
•72y2 = 2 * 2* 3 * 6 * y * y
Notice that 36y7 and 72y2 have a common factor
of 2, 3, 6 and y in common, so the greatest
common factor of 36y7 and 72y2 is 2 * 3 * 6 * y*
y= 36y2
STEPS IN FACTORING COMMON
MONOMIALS 1
Step 1:
Determine the GCF of all terms
in the polynomial.

36x 7 – 72x 2

GCF: 36x2
STEPS IN FACTORING COMMON
MONOMIALS 2
Step 2:
Factor the equation using
the GCF.
36x7 – 72x2 GCF: 36x2

=36x2(x5-2)
HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES!
EXAMPLE 1:
50x - 80y =10(5x-8y)

EXAMPLE 2:
35x2 - 25 =5(7x-5)

EXAMPLE 3:

DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES

The Difference of Two Squares is a kind of

factorization in which a2-b2 is expressed as
(a-b)(a+b). When the sum and difference is
multiplied, it results in a special product.
STEPS IN FACTORING THE
DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES 1
1. CHECK IF THERE ARE
ONLY TWO TERMS.

a -16.
2

Yep, there are only two terms here:

a2 and 16. Remember that terms are
always separated by + or -.
STEPS IN FACTORING THE
DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES 2
2. CHECK IF THE FIRST AND
SECOND TERM ARE PERFECT
SQUARES.

a -16.
2
a =(a)(a)
2
16=(4)(4)
Both a2 and 16 are perfect squares,
so that’s two steps down!
STEPS IN FACTORING THE
DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES 3
3. CHECK IF THE OPERATION
USED IS SUBTRACTION. IF ALL
THREE STEPS HAVE BEEN
SATISFIED, BEGIN FACTORING.

a -16.
2

(a-4)(a+4)
IF THERE SEEMS TO BE NO
DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES…
CHECK FOR A GCF, THEN CHECK
INSIDE THE PARENTHESIS FOR
THE DIFFERENCE OF TWO
SQUARES.

15a 3 -60a =15a(a -4)

=15a(a-2)(a+2)
HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES!
EXAMPLE 1:
x2 - 4 =(x-2)(x+2)

EXAMPLE 2:
9x2 – 25y2=(3x-5y)(3x+5y)

EXAMPLE 3: =4a2(4a2-9)
