CHOOSING THE TOPIC

 The reason I chose this topic was because I found myself being
interested in the way Halloween emerged, from the belief that good
or bad ghosts would come to our world on the 31st of October, to a
holiday where kids would trick-or-treat in order to receive different
kinds of treats. Starting from this question I had, I researched the
holiday of Halloween in order to come to an answer.
HISTORY AND CUSTOMS

 Since candles placed in hollowed-out pumpkins or turnips

(commonly grown for food and abundant at this time of year) would
produce flickering flames, especially on cold nights in October, the
phenomenon may have led to the association of spirits with the
lanterns; and this in turn may have led to the tradition of carving
scary faces on them. It is an old legend that candle flames which
flicker on Samhain night are being touched by the spirits of dead
ancestors, or "ghosts".
HISTORY AND CUSTOMS

 The custom of wearing costumes has been explained by Prince

Sorie Conteh, who wrote: "It was traditionally believed that the souls
of the departed wandered the earth until All Saints' Day, and All
Hallows' Eve provided one last chance for the dead to gain vengeance
on their enemies before moving to the next world. In order to avoid
being recognised by any soul that might be seeking such vengeance,
people would wear masks or costumes to disguise their identities".
HALLOWEEN’S DARK SIDE

 In a disturbing yet eye-opening interview included in a video about

Halloween, a former Satanist tells of his experience growing up in a
satanic coven. Now a committed Christian, the gentleman recalls a
childhood of fear and sexual abuse. At age 11, he participated in a
Halloween-night ceremony in which a young girl was sacrificed on an
altar and her blood shared by adult participants. As an adult,
Halloween and its "symbols of death", he says, bring back memories
of abuse and horrible images.
HISTORY AND CUSTOMS
PERSONAL CONCLUSION

 Even though the holiday of Halloween does not scare me at the

moment, since I am not a child anymore, Halloween is still able to
make me feel something special. I enjoy the fact that, being celebrated
in the fall, the whole atmosphere contributes to the idea of a scary
holiday.
PERSONAL CONCLUSION

 I think that the cold and lonely leafless trees, the dark colour
palette and the general cold weather perfectly fits what Halloween was
originally intended to signify. Because nature seems to threaten us, we
are being wary of bad omens, thus we want to keep them away with
custom believed to work.
