Ishmael Bernal

- Son of Elena Bernal and Pacifico Ledesma
- Burgos Elementary School, Mapa High School
and at the university of the Philippines
After graduation he worked with lamberto avellana's
documentary outfit before proceeding to France where he
earned his Licentiate in French Literature and Philosophy at the
University of aix-en-provence. He received his Diploma in Film
Directing in 1970 at the Film Insititue of India in Poona under the
Colombo plan scholarship.

Ishmael bernal was a filipino film, stage and television director,


actor and screenwriter. He directed many landmark Filipino films
such as Nunal sa Tubig (1975), City After
Dark (1980), Relasyon (1982), himala (1982), and hinugot sa
langit (1985). He was declared a national artist of the
philippines in 2001.
Achievements
He won the Urian for best director four times
for Dalawang Pugad, Isang Ibon (Two Nests, One
Bird), 1977; Broken Marriage, 1983; Hinugot sa
Langit (Wrenched From Heaven), 1985; and Pahiram
Ng Isang Umaga (Lend Me One Morning), 1989; and
the best screenplay for City After Dark, 1980.
His film Pagdating sa Dulo, won for him the FAMAS
for best screenplay award while himala (Miracle),
1982, garnered nine major awards in the metro
manila film festival.

He considered as one of the Titans of Philippine
Theater. He was a playwright, director, actor and theater
organizer with an output of one novel, 150 poems and 50
plays in his 65-year lifetime. Through the foundation of the
Arena Theater, Montano institutionalized “legitimate
theater” in the Philippines. He also have lifetime
achievement award as part of National Artist of the
Philippines.

Montano started his tutelage under a British mentor, Marie


Leslie Prising, when he was thirteen.

He was part of the UP Stage when he studied in the


University of the Philippines.
Montano organized the Arena Theater “to bring drama to
the masses”.

In 1953, the theater opened with three one-act plays and


broke all records of all performances in Philippine theater
history

His awards include the Kalinangan Award from the city of


Manila (1968), the Presidential Award for Merit in Drama
and Theater (1961), the Citizen’s Committee for Mass
Media Award (1967 and 1968), the Pamulinawen Award
(1981), and the National Artist Award (2001).

National artist Jose Joya was a
pioneer modern and abstract
artist who was active as a
painter, printmaker, mixed-
media artist and ceramicist. He
pioneered abstract
expressionism in the
Philippines. His canvases were
characterized by "dynamic
spontaneity" and "quick
gestures" of action painting.
His works were strongly influenced by the tropical
landscapes of the Philippine Islands. Among his
masterpieces are the Nanking (a collage rendered
with Asian calligraphy and forms and patterns
resembling rice paddies), the Granadean Arabesque
(1958) and Biennial (1964).
