A Clutch is a machine member used to
connect the driving shaft to a driven
shaft, so that the driven shaft may be
started or stopped at will, without
stopping the driving shaft.
Clutch is used to transmit power from driving
shaft to driven shaft.
In automobiles, where vehicle can be stopped
for a while or to change the gear, the
requirement is that the driven shaft should
stop but the engine should run naturally under
the no load condition.
 This is achieved by using clutch mounted
between engine shaft and gearbox shaft and
which is operated by a lever.
Multiplate clutch is used when large
torque is to be transmitted e.g. motor cars
and machine tools.
 Multiplate clutch is used when compact
construction is required e.g. scooters and
motor cycles.
A typical clutch consists of the following parts:
Clutch basket,
Clutch hub or inner hub,
Friction plates or drive plates,
Steel plates or driven plates,
pressure plates
clutch springs
These clutches basically have drive and driven plates.
The drive plates are not allowed to rotate
independently by using interlocking lugs and slots,
which do not permit relative rotational spin, but axial
movement. The driven plates are mounted on the
internally splined hubs, which splines on the gearbox
spigot shaft.
A dished annular disc forms the diaphragm spring, the
inner portion of which is radially slotted and the outer
ends are enlarged with a circular hole to prevent stress
concentration during disengagement.
These radial slots divide the disc into number of
release levers.
A shouldered pivot post, riveted to the cover pressing
locates the diaphragm spring in position. These rivets
also hold a pair of fulcrum rings on either side of the
diaphragm.
During operation, due to engagement and
disengagement of the clutch, the diaphragm cone
angle changes continuously as wear occurs. In order
to accommodate the change, the diaphragm pivots
and rolls about the fulcrum rings.
During engagement of the clutch the diaphragm
bears against the outer ring, and during
disengagement the reaction load is taken by the
inner ring.
As the friction linings wear, the spring diaphragm
becomes more dished so that a larger axial
clamping load is applied initially. As the linings wear
increases, the distance between the cover pressing
and pressure plate become excessive, so that the
axial thrust begins to decline.
Used in heavy machinery
Used in special purpose military vehicles
Used in racing cars and bikes
Used in moto guzzi bikes.
A multiplate clutch is more commonly used in two
wheelers.
The reason behind this is that two wheeler engines
are small and compact and are generally light in
weight.
To get minimum slip and maximum transmission of
power, the frictional force between flywheel and
clutch plate must be optimum. The frictional
coefficient of the friction lining, the size of clutch
plate and the pressure force on clutch plate play
the vital role in deciding power transmission.
Organic materials
Kevlar materials
Semi-metallic materials
Sintered materials
Carbon materials
In case of new clutch ,the intensity of
pressure is uniform along the surface of
clutch. [ Uniform Pressure theory is used ]
But in case of old clutch - Uniform wear
theory is more correct.
In actual practice, usually the theory of
uniform wear is used in analysis of clutch.
In mutilate disc clutch
N1=no of disc on driving shaft
N2=no of disc on driven shaft
So no. of pairs in contact, N= N1+N2-1
