What is Etnolinguistic?
Ethnolinguistics is the study of the
intricacies of everyday human language within a
tribe.
The term ethnolinguistics comes from the
word etymology, which means the study of tribes
and linguistics, which means the study of the
intricacies of everyday human language, or also
called linguistics (Sudaryanto 1996: 9), which was
born because of the merging of the usual
approaches.
• Koentjaraningrat said that language is part of ethnic. So, the
relationship between language and ethnic is a subordinate
relationship, where language is under the scope of ethnic.
1. In different societies, and different communities, people speak
differently.
2. These differences in ways of speaking are profound and
systematic.
3. These differences reflect different culture values, or at least
different hierarchies of value.
4. Different way of speaking, different communicative styles, can be
explained and made sense of, in terms of independently
established different culture values and culture priorities.
• According to Kridalaksana (1983: 42),
ethnolinguistics is (1) a branch of linguistics that
investigates the relationship between language
and rural communities or communities that do not
yet have writings, this field is also called
anthropological linguistics
• (2) anthropological linguistic branches that
investigate the relationship of language and
linguistic attitudes towards language, one of the
most prominent aspects of ethnolinguistics is the
problem of language relavity.
• According to Haugen in Aron, (2007: 10)
states that ethnolinguistics is a study of ten
studies of language ecology that has been
established. Haugen interpreted that
ethnolinguistic or linguistic anthropology or
cultural linguistics dissect the choice of
language use, ways and mindset in relation
to patterns of language use, ritual
languages, and discourse creation.
• Hymes in Duranti (2007: 2) concluded that ethnolinguistics
is the study of speech and language witin the context of
anthropology ethnolinguistics is the study of speech and
language associated with anthropological contexts.

• Ilic (2004: 1) in his international article stated: Language


might influence and be influenced by culture, and what
can be found out about a particular culture by studying
its language by providing an overview of the relationship
between the study of language and the study of culture.

learned using its language by providing a view of the
relationship between language and culture studies.
• Ethnolinguistic is all about culture that
influence how someone talk and how
someone use their language. There’s one
characteristic of language which is

cultural diffrences and the way they
pronounce some word will also be
