MUSIC OF AFRICA

• Music has always been an important part of the


daily life of the african people, whether for work,
religion, ceremonies, or even communication.
Singing, dancing, hand clapping and the beating
of drums are essential to many african
ceremonies, including those for birth, death,
initiation, marriage and funerals. MUSICS and
DANCE are also important to religous
expression and political events.

MARACATU DANCE
maracatu first surfaced in the african state of
Pernambuco, combining the strong rhythms of
african percussion instrument with portuguese
melodies. The maracatu groups were called
nacaoes (nations) who paraded with a
drumming ensenble numbering up to 100,
accompanied by singer, a chorus and coterie
of dancers

• the alfia is a larger wooden drum that is a
rope tuned, complemented by the tarol which
is shallow nare drum, and te caixa-de-
guerra which is a war-like snare. Proving the
clanging sound is the gongue, a metal
cowbell. the shaker are represented by the
agbe a gourd shaker covered by beads, and
the miniero or ganza, a metal cylindrical
shaker filled with metal shot or small dried
seeds.

BLUES
• Blues is a music genre and musical
form which was originated in the
Deep South of the United States
around the 1870s by African
Americans from roots in African
musical traditions, African-American
work songs, and spirituals.
• The ‘Father of the Blues’.
• William Christopher Handy was born in
Alabama in 1873 and who worked a number
of odd jobs before establishing himself as
both a musician and a music teacher. He
was raised in a strict household that
forbade musical instruments, but he
secretly bought a guitar and spent hours
practicing the trumpet in his first band.

SPIRITUAL
Spirituals (or Negro spirituals) are the
songs which were sung by the black
slaves in the United States in the 18th and
19th centuries. The words to many Negro
spirituals have Christian themes. This is
because Black slaves in the United States
turned to religion, as a way to cope with
the pain of slavery.

In music, a call and response is a
succession of two distinct phrases
usually written in different parts of the
music, where the second phrase is
heard as a direct commentary on or in
response to the first
