DISTRIBUTION
CHARATERISTICS OF
THE NORMAL
PROBABILITY
DISTRIBUTION
The curve is concave
downward between
x = µ+σ and x = µ - σ and
concave upward for values
of x outside the interval. µ-3σ µ-2σ µ-σ µ µ+σ µ+2σ µ+3σ
♥The total area under the curve is 1.00
Normal
curve???
Finding the areas under the
normal curve is the same as finding the probability.
Example 1:
Find the area from
z= 0 to z = 1.35
A= 0.4115
P = 41.15%
Example 2.
-3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
Area from z= 0 to z= -2.0 is 0.4772
Area from z= 0 to z= 2.5 is 0.4938 } add! A = 0.971
0.9710 P = 97.10%
Areas Under the Normal Curve
Let A = area
Let A = area,
0.4834 0.4474
:. A-2.13<Z<1.62=0.4834+0.4474 0.9308
= 0.9308
Areas Under the Normal Curve
Example 2.
A random variable has a normal distribution with the
mean (u) = 80 and the standard deviation ( õ) = 4.8.
What are the probabilities that this random variable
will take on a value:
Z= x - µ = 87.2 - 80
õ 4.7
= 1.5
Let P= probability
0 1.5
:. P( x < 87.2) = A (Z < 1.5) = 0.5
= 0.4332 + 0.5 0.5 0.4332
= 0.9332 or 93.21% 0.9308
b. X > 76.4
76.4 - 80
Z=
4.8
= - 0.75 ( left of 0 )
Z1 = 81.2 - 80 = 0.25
4.8
Z2 = 86 - 80 = 1.25
