1.0 Matter: Physical &
Chemical Properties
¤1.1 Safety in the Science
Classroom
Safety Rules &
Procedures
¤ WHEN do we follow safety rules and
procedures?
Whenever you are doing a lab!

¤ WHY do we follow them?

To ensure that you and your
classmates are safe!
What are the Safety
Rules & Procedures?

1. Wear safety glasses

or goggles when near
chemicals or open flame.

2. Be very careful
around open flame.
3. Do NOT taste
anything in the lab!!!!

4. Tie back loose

hair and roll up
sleeves.
5. Label all containers
and glassware.

6. Never pour liquids from

a position above your
head.

7. Position all
equipment away
from the edge of
the table
8. Do NOT
bring food,
drink or gum
into the lab.

9. Report all accidents and spills

immediately to the teacher; clean up
spills immediately.
Important Symbols
¤ There are special symbols that are used to
tell us the type and level of danger of a
substance.
¤ Safety hazard symbols tell us two things:

1. The type of hazard:

flammable poisonous explosive corrosive

2. The degree of the hazard:

red octagon orange diamond yellow triangle

“danger” “warning” “caution”
WHMIS
¤ Stands for the Workplace Hazardous
Materials Information System

¤ This is another important system for

labeling hazardous materials.
¤ It was specifically designed to protect
workers from substances found in the
workplace.
¤ The main 8 WHMIS symbols are:

compressed
gas
oxidizing
material

corrosive
dangerously
reactive
flammable & material
combustible
poisonous and infectious material
causing immediate and serious
toxic effects

poisonous and infectious causing

other toxic effects

biohazardous infectious material

Jobs where WHMIS
is very important:
¤ Lifeguard: must work with: chlorine gas,
granular chlorine, sodium trisulfate, sodium
bicarbonate, diatamaechous earth

¤ Mechanic: must work with: gasoline, oil,

antifreeze, strong cleaning agents, hydraulic
oil is extremely flammable, must also dispose
of chemicals properly
¤ Food Service Industry: must work with
cleaning agents
¤ Power Engineer: must work with antifreeze,
ammonia, sulphur-based by-products, liquid
nitrogen
¤ Safety Inspector
¤ Fire Fighters: must be able to detect dangerous
situations involving highly combustible and
explosive propellants
¤ Forestry: must work with pesticides, herbicides
¤ Truck Drivers: transport dangerous substances
