What is Subculture?
Subcultures- are
those groups that have
values and norms that
are distinct from those
held by the majority.

They are unique in things

like language, cuisine,
ideologies, religious
beliefs, and more.

“Subculture is used to designate both the
traditional norms of a sub -society and the
emergent norms of a group caught in a
frustrating and conflict -laden situation .”
- Milton Yinger
Ken Gelder identifies six key ways in which
subcultures can be understood:
01 Through their often negative relations to work
(as ‘idle’, ‘parasitic’, at play or at leisure, etc.)

02 Through their ambivalent relation to

class
(since subcultures are not ‘class-conscious’ and don’t conform to traditional class
definitions)
03 Through their association with territory
(the ‘street’, the ‘hood’, the club, etc.)

04 Through their movement out of the home

and into non-domestic forms of belonging
05 Through their stylistic ties to excess
(with some exceptions)
and exaggeration
06 Through their refusal of the banalities
of ordinary life and massification.
