FREUD
PSYCHOANALYTIC
THEORY
isthe psychoanalytic
defense mechanism
that occurs when the
individual remains
locked in an earlier
developmental stage because needs are under
or over-gratified.
Freud’s Stage of
Psychosexual
Development
I. ORAL STAGE
(birth to 18 months)
The erogenous
zone is the mouth.
Chewing, sucking
and biting are
chief sources of
pleasure.
FIXATIONS AT
ORAL STAGE
Oral Receptive –
strong tendency
to smoke, drink
alcohol, overeat
Oral Aggressive –
strong tendency
to bite nails or
use curse words
or even gossip.
II. ANAL STAGE
(18 months to 3 years)
The child’s focus of
pleasure in this stage
is the anus.
Through toilet
training, the child
comes in contact
with the rules of
society.
FIXATIONS AT
ANAL STAGE
Anal Retentive –
obsession with
cleanliness,
perfection, and
control.
Anal Expulsive –
person may
become messy and
disorganized.
III. PHALLIC STAGE
(Ages 3 to 6)
The erogenous zone
is the genitals as the
child discovers that
self stimulation is
enjoyable.
The word “phallic”
comes the Latin word
“phallus,” which
means “penis.”
The Electra Complex
FIXATIONS AT
PHALLIC STAGE
Sexual
Deviances (both
overindulging
and avoidance)
and weak or
confused sexual
identity
according to
psychoanalysts.
IV. LATENCY STAGE
(Age 6 to puberty)
In this stage, sexual
urges remain
repressed.
Children’s focus is
the acquisition of
physical and
academic skills.
V. GENITAL STAGE
(puberty onwards)
Sexual urges are once
again awakened.
Adolescents focus
their sexual urges
towards the opposite
sex peers.
The pleasure centered
on the genitals.
FREUD’S PERSONALITY
COMPONENTS
The Id – operates
on the pleasure
principle.
The Ego – operates
using the reality
principle.
The Superego –
embodies a
person’s moral
aspect.
TOPOGRAPHICAL MODEL
The Unconscious – Freud believed this is
the most of what influence us.
The Conscious – comprises a very small
part so that, in our everyday life, we are
only aware of a very small part of what
makes up our personality.
The Subconscious – this is the part of us
that we can reach if prompted, but is not
in our active conscious.
