POLLUTION

The term pollution refers to any change in

the natural quality of environment brought
about by chemical ,physical and biological
factors.
Types Of Pollution:
• Air Pollution

• Water Pollution

• Soil Pollution

• Noise Pollution
Air Pollution

• Air Pollution is an excessive concentration of

foreign matter in the air which adversely
affects the well-being of human beings.
Air Pollution
• Source- Automobiles, industries , burning of
garbage and brick kilns.Pollutants of gas , solid &
liquid particles of both organic & inorganic
chemicals. Gases such as sulphur dioxide and carbon
monoxide, hydrogen sulphide etc.

• Effects - Inhalation of toxic gases damages lungs ,

weakens bones, causes asthma , cancer , bronchitis
and influenza. It is one of the major cause of Global
Warming.
Water Pollution

• Water Pollution can be defined as alteration in

physical, chemical or biological characteristics of
water , making it unsuitable for designated in its
natural state.
Water Pollution

• Source -Gases , soil , humus , industrial waste ,

oil spills , sewage , radioactive wastes. Domestic ,
industrial & agricultural effluents.

• Effects – Affects of growth of aquatic vegetation.

Oxygen level of waterbodies decrease.
Concentration of various toxic substances along
food chain increase. Dirty water contains
pathogens which are harmful to human health.
Soil Pollution

• Soil pollution is defined as the change in physical ,

chemical and biological conditions of the soil through
man intervention resulting in degradation in quality
and productivity of the soil.
Soil Pollution
• Source- Industrial , urban , commercial &
domestic waste , chemical fertilizers , pesticides
& biomedical wastes.

• Effects- Industrial & chemical waste cause

pollution of underground water. Land & soil
pollution is responsible for loss of fertility &
productivity of the soil. Soil contains many
pathogenic bacteria , viruses which are
transmitted to man by consumption of fruits &
vegetables.
Noise Pollution

• Noise pollution is defined as an unwanted

sound that is irritant and source of stress.
Noise Pollution

• Source- Most of the noise originates from the

industrial , transport , household , defense sectors.
It is also caused by loud speakers &
miscellaneous sources like bus , car etc.

• Effects – It causes physical , physiological &

psychological effect on human beings. It increases
the rate of heartbeat. Causes impairment of night
vision , migraine , headaches , dizziness and pupil
dilation.
