BUILDING SCIENCE CASE STUDY

Climate Responsive
Buildings

Abhishek Soni
2018UAR1734
Introduction
This case study is to understand the methods and techniques applied in a building to make it more
responsive to the climate of their location.

This presentation is based on case study of two buildings from Indian Temperate Zone and Global
Temperate Zone, one from each.

CASE STUDY 1: Courtyard House, Bangalore, India

CASE STUDY 2: Flores Malacca, Le Port, France
Global Temperate Zone

Indian Temperate Zone

Le Port, Reunion Island, Bangalore, Karnataka, India
France
CASE STUDY 1
Courtyard
House
Bangalore Climatology
Altitude: 923 m

Wind Direction: South West

Annual Precipitation: 905 mm

Temperature: 34.2 °C - 15.1 °C

Sunpath
Introduction
Location: Bangalore, Karnataka, India

Category: Private residence

Architects: Akshay Heranjal, Aditi Pai, Nishita Bhatia,

Priyanka Bankapur

Built-up Area: 5000 sqft

Courtyard as Focal Point
Taking the courtyard as a focal point, the entire architecture and the landscape conceptualization
revolves around using the feature as a climate responsive design
Rotation towards North
The building is rotated towards the northern sides (to have maximum fenestration avoiding the harsh
rays of the sun during the day)
Water Channel
A continuous water channel is introduced in the direction of the prevailing winds which aids in
maintaining the micro-climate of the interiors.
Courtyard Provides Light and Ventilation
Centrally placed courtyard provides light to all the spaces and also provides air movement due to
induced ventilation through the openings on the walls.
Ecological System saves energy
The greens, the water channel and the courtyard form a strong ecological system making the building
less dependent on mechanical (re)sources and reducing energy consumption.
Layered Plantation
Plantation is structured as a 3 layered system with ground covers, shrubs and trees which helps in
maintaining the biodiversity of the entire site.
CASE STUDY 2
Flores
Malacca
Le Port Climatology
Altitude: 6 m

Wind Direction: South East

Annual Precipitation: 1000 mm

Temperature: 30.5 °C - 19.2 °C

Sunpath
Introduction
Location: Le Port, Reunion Island, France

Category: Mix housing

Architects: Michel Reynaud, Antoine Perrau

Built-up Area: 16280 sqft

Buffer Vegetation
Buffers of vegetation between the street and the building creates a temperature differential of 7 ° C
between them (without air conditioning).
Orientation of Shading Devices
The orientation of the shading devices has been determined through computer simulations of sunscreen
designs for favourable shading and minimum material use,
Porous Facades
The porosity of the facades reduces the energy consumption and provides thermal comfort without the
need for air conditioning.
Dual Purpose Solar Panelling
Solar hot water panels and photovoltaic roof panels shield the roof from high levels of solar radiation.
This dual purpose of the solar devices increases their efficiency and reduces overall cost.
Wood reduces Carbon Footprint
Increased use of wood for the structure of corridors, sidings, sunscreens and pergolas reduces the carbon
footprint of the project.
