CARBON DIOXIDE-

OXYGEN CYCLE
What is carbon dioxide?
-cabon dioxide is a chemical compound composed of one carbon
& 2 oxygen atoms. It is present in the Earth’s atmosphere at a low
concentration & acts as a greenhouse gas. It is a major component of
carbon cycle.
What is oxygen?
-it is a colorless odorless reactive gas, the chemical element of
atomic number 8 and the life-supporting component of the air.
What is oxygen used for?
- It is the most abundant element in the human body making up
around 65% of the body’s mass. Oxygen is used by animals and plants
in the respiration (breathing) process. Oxygen are also used in medicine
to treat people with breathing problems and are also used as life
support for astronauts and scuba divers.
Why oxygen is important?
- most life on Earth takes in oxygen gas (O2) to use in respiration.
Many organic molecules in living things have oxygen in them, such as
proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and fats. Oxygen is a part of
water, which all known life needs to live.
WHAT IS CARBON
DIOXIDE CYCLE?
 Carbon cycle is the process by which carbon moves
from the atmosphere into organisms and the earth and
then back into the atmosphere. Plants take carbon
dioxide from the air and use it to make food. Animals
then eat the food and carbon is stored in their bodies or
released as CO 2 through respiration.

 What is the importance of the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) cycle?

 It regulates the carbon dioxide concentration of our atmosphere, keeping
temperatures moderate.
WHAT IS OXYGEN CYCLE?

Oxygen cycle is the cycle that helps moves

oxygen through the three main regions of the
earth, the ATMOSPHERE, the BIOSPHERE, and the
LITHOSPHERE.
Atmosphere- is of course the region of gases that lies above the Earth’s surface and it is
one of the largest reservoirs of free oxygen.
* In the atmosphere oxygen is freed by the process called photolysis. This is when high energy
sunlight breaks apart oxygen bearing molecules to produce free oxygen.
Biosphere is the sum of all the Earth’s ecosystems. This also has some free oxygen
produced from photosynthesis and other life processes.
* In the biosphere the main cycles are respiration and photosynthesis. Respiration is when
animals and humans breathe consuming oxygen to be used in metabolic process and
exhaling carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis is the reverse of this process and is mainly done by
plants and plankton.
Lithosphere is the largest reservoir of oxygen. Most of this oxygen is not on its own or free
moving but part of chemical compounds such as silicates and oxides.
*The lithosphere mostly fixes oxygen in minerals such as silicates and oxides. Most of the time
the process is automatic all it takes is a pure form of an element coming in contact with
oxygen such as what happens when iron rusts.
Oxygen cycle is the process by which oxygen released into the atmosphere by
photosynthetic organisms while the carbon dioxide released as the by product of
respiration is taken up for photosynthesis.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Photosynthesis is the process by which
plants, some bacteria use the energy from
the sunlight to produce glucose from
carbon dioxide and water. This glucose
can be converted into pyruvate which
releases adenosine triphosphate by
cellular respiration. Oxygen is also formed.
WHAT IS CARBON
DIOXIDE-OXYGEN CYCLE?
Plants use carbon dioxide in a process
known as photosynthesis. During
photosynthesis, plants gives off oxygen as
a waste product. Carbon dioxide moves
from the air into the leaves of the plants
through tiny openings in the plants leaves.
Oxygen moves out of the plant leaf
through these same openings.
