Climb aboard, get ready to explore
There’s so much to find, join us if you mind!
Summary
The passage starts with a king who
sent three men to locate the source of
the leak of the ship. Unfortunately, the
three men failed to find the leak.

Eventually, the ship Victoria sent

out for a task for the king.
The island Mulocca was the first to
be discovered, full of natural
resources and fruits and various
animals.

Next was the island of Tidore that

had lofty, peaked mountains where
cloves grew.
They discovered the island of
Caphi, whom they referred to its
people as pigmies. The people of the
island of Caphi were as small as
dwarves, and Pigafetta and his men
found them to be amusing.
The people of the island of Caphi
were then subjected by force by the
king of Tidore.
The people of the islands were
referred to as “heathens” because they
went around while naked in their daily
lives, wearing only a little piece of
bark from a tree to cover their
private areas.

They discovered many islands full

of people that practiced cannibalism.
They discovered the island of
Bandan which they did not continue to
explore as it was outside of the course
of the ship.
As they sailed amidst various more
islands, they were struck by a fierce
storm, causing the men of the ship to
make a vow of pilgrimage to the Lady of
Guidance.
They were able to flee from the
storm, landing in an island full of
people whom they referred to as
“savage and bestial” and “the ugliest
of the Indies”. These people were
armed and ready to shoot their weapons
at Pigafitta and his men as soon as
they saw them.
They were quickly befriended,
however, after being given gifts.
Pigafetta and his men stayed in
that island for fifteen days in order
to repair their ship from the damage
caused by the storm.
The passages end with the capture
of one man so that they could be taken
to an island where they could lay
provisions. This island was the island
of Malua.
Old Learnings
• The people of the local islands went about their
day while they were naked, with only a little
piece of tree bark as covering for their private
parts.
• There were some tribes or groups of people in the
local islands that practiced eating flesh or
cannibalism.
• Pigafetta and his men gave gifts and presents to
the local island people in order to befriend them.
• The islands had different names from back then
compared to now.
New Learnings
• The local island people were referred to as
“heathens” for not having a king and for walking
around naked.
• Different tribes and groups of people had different
reactions to the arrival of the foreign visitors.
Some were more friendly and engaged easily in trades,
whereas some were more hostile and readied their
weapons at the sight of the Pigafetta and his men.
• Pigafetta and his men found many food and fruits that
they found were similar to the ones they had in their
country, such as the connilicai that they likened to
a pineapple.
