SITE
SITE was an experimental satellite communications project
launched in India in 1975, designed jointly by National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The
project made available informational television programs to rural India. The main
objectives of the experiment were to educate the poor people of India on various
issues via satellite broadcasting and also help India gain technical experience in
the field of satellite communications.
Objectives

o Gain experience in the development, testing and management of satellite based


instructional TV system particularly in rural areas

o Demonstrate the potential value of satellite technology in the rapid development of


effective communication in the developing countries

o Demonstrate the value of satellite broadcast TV in the partial instructions of village


inhabitants

o Stimulate national development in India, with important managerial, economic,


technological and social implications
Types of Programs

Educational Television (ETV) Instructional Television (ITV)


• ETV programs mainly focused on • ITV programs were meant for adult
school children in the age group of audiences, mainly to those who
5-12 years were illiterate
• It makes the education more • It cover incidents of national
interesting, creative, purposive and importance for improved practices
stimulating and also creates in agriculture, health, family
awareness in the changing society planning etc. and some recreation
• They were broadcast for 1.5 hours programs
during school hours • They were broadcast for 2.5 hours
during the evenings
PAST-SITE Project
With the victory of television in rural primary schools, a new program called PAST-
SITE program comes.

The main objective of this are:


 Familiarize the rural masses with improved and scientific knowledge of farming,
use of fertilizers and maintenance of health and hygiene
 Bring about national and emotional integration
 Make rural children aware of the importance of education and healthy
environment
