METHANOLIC LEAF EXTRACTION OF COGON

(POACEAE: Imperata cylindrica) AS A

POTENTIAL ALTERNATIVE THERAPEUTICS
FOR BREAST CANCER
INTRODUCTION
Objectives of the Study

The primary objective of this study was to find the potential of

cogon leaves which may be used as an alternative treatment for breast
cancer to substitute the conventional drugs or treatment which have some
adverse effects. Specifically, it aimed to test lung cancer cell lines by the
Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM) at
Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT).
Significance of the Study
The worldwide survey reported that the percentage of people,
especially women, being affected by this disease is increasing yearly. The
increase in demand in industrially developed countries to use alternative
approaches to treat anti-breast cancer, such as plant-based medicines.

To our knowledge, so far, no studies have been published on the effect

of I. cylindrica leaf extract on human cancers. Therefore, this study will be
undertaken in order to evaluate the anticancer properties of the leaf
extract of I. cylindrica.

This study may also serve as baseline data for those who are interested
in studying I. cylindrica or commonly known cogon.
Scope and Limitations

This study is limited only to the I. cylindrica as an alternative approach

due the conventional drugs which possesses some adverse effects and to
be used as an anti-breast cancer agents that possess less side effects and
safe to be used on human bodies.

This study will be focused only on the leaves of the cogon as anti-breast
cancer and it will not include the other parts of the said sample.
Methodology

• Collection of the plant sample

• Processing of the plant sample
• Preparation of methanolic leaves extract of Imperata
cylindrica
• Processing of samples for test in breast cancer cell lines
