INTRODUCTION: OCEAN WAVES AND WAVE
ENERGY
• Ocean waves are being recognized as a resource to be exploited for the
generation of sustainable energy.
• These waves contain a huge amount of energy which is not being put into
utilization by the mankind.
• The rigorous vertical motion of surface ocean waves contains a lot of
kinetic (motion) energy that is captured by wave energy technologies to
do useful tasks, for example, generation of electricity, desalinization of
water and pumping of water into reservoirs.
• However, it is not easy to harness power from wave generator plants due
to many reasons some of which are due to impulsive loadings induced by
violent waves and harsh operating conditions.
WAVE POWER DEVICES
• Wave power devices are devices
which converts wave energy into
usable form of energy.
• Fundamental wave energy devices:
1. Wave Profile Devices
Wave profile devices are a class of
wave energy devices which floats on
or near to the sea surface and moves
in response to the shape of the
incident wave or, for submersible
devices, it moves up and down under
the influence of the variations in
underwater pressure as a wave
moves by.

2.Oscillating Water Column

The Oscillating Water Column, (OWC) is
a popular shoreline wave energy device
normally positioned onto or near to rocks
or cliffs which are next to a deep sea
bottom. They consist of a partly
submerged hollow chamber fixed directly
at the shoreline which converts wave
energy into air pressure. As the incident
waves outside enter and exit the
chamber, changes in wave movement on
the opening cause the water level within
the enclosure to oscillate up and down
acting like a giant piston on the air above
the surface of the water, which in turn

3.Wave Capture Device
A Wave Capture Device also known as
an Overtopping wave power device, is
a shoreline to near shore wave energy
device that captures the movements of
the tides and waves and converts it
into potential energy. Wave energy is
converted into potential energy by
lifting the water up onto a higher level.
The wave capture device, or more
commonly an overtopping device,
elevates ocean waves to a holding
reservoir above sea level.

RESEARCH GAP

• With reference to the above mentioned literature, the systems such as two
consecutive plates in a flow are being shadowed. This idea is very helpful in
designing wave power devices such as oscillatory water column which
primarily functions on this principle. Hence, the study of two plates in a flow
field either horizontal, vertical or inclined and the pressure rise of the fluid
flowing between these two plates, the changes that occur due to change in
parameters like relative depth, time period and distance between the two
plates is necessary.
OBJECTIVE

• To study the effect of pressure rise and

drop of fluid flow between two
consecutive vertical thin plates
separated by a finite distance in a
wave of intermediate water depth
(0.05<d/L<0.5) along with forces
induced by the water flow on the plates
in horizontal and vertical directions at
different relative depths, time periods
and distance between the plates.
METHODOLOGY

Numerical simulation is done for a linear, 2-D wave flow over two
consecutive vertical thin plates at intermediate water depth (0.05<d/L<0.5)
using ANSYS FLUENT software under volume of fluid (VOF) method. This
is carried out in a 2-D Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) with a flat bottom to
study the pressure distribution of water flowing between the two plates.
The following steps are followed under this methodology:
• Construct a rectangular tank of length 100m and depth of 5-10m.
• Mesh refinement is done up to 1 lakh
• A flap type wave generator is used to produce irregular waves along the
length of the tank and different boundary conditions are setup
• 30 iterations are carried out with a time step of t=0.01s under time periods
as T=1,2,3,4,5s and plots for required results are obtained
PLAN OF WORK

The numerical analysis and simulations of the project along with thesis will be
submitted in three phases for different parameters such as relative depth, distance
between the plates.

1)First simulation will be submitted by the end of 7th semester, 2019

2)Second and Third simulations will be submitted in the 8th semester, 2020
