TATA POWER DELHI DISTRIBUTION LIMITED

Joint venture between the Government of Delhi and The Tata

Power Company Limited.
Started operations on 1 July 2002 and currently serves 6 million
people in the North and North-west parts of Delhi.
The company’s operations span an area of 510 sq. km.
TPDDL deals with a recorded peak load of around 1976 MW.
Area Of Operation
TPDDL supplies power to Mumbai and North and North West Delhi with new units being set up in
Ajmer.
In Delhi, their Area Of Operation is divided into the following categories:
A) Circle - There are five circles in total :
1) City
2)Town
3) Urban
4)Suburban
5)Metro
B) Districts – Delhi is divided into 12 districts in total.
C)Zones - Total 39 in number.
Distribution Transformer
A transformer is an equipment with two or more windings,
conductively disjointed but magnetically coupled, meant for
transmitting power from one voltage level to other.
The step down transformers used for electric power
distribution purpose are referred as distribution transformer.
Distribution transformers are generally small in size and filled
with insulating oil.
Secondary terminals of distribution transformer deliver Fig 1 : Distribution Transformer
electrical power at a utilization voltage level to the consumer
end via energy metering system.
Testing of Transformer
To prove that the transformer meets customer’s specifications and design
expectations, the transformer has to go through different testing procedures in
manufacturer premises.
Transformer testing :
Routine Tests - are mainly for confirming the operational performance of the
individual unit in a production lot. Routine tests are carried out on every unit
manufactured.
Type Tests - confirm main and basic design criteria of a production lot.
Special Tests – are done as per customer requirement to obtain information
useful to the user during operation or maintenance of the transformer.
Ring Main Unit (RMU)
 Ring Main Unit (RMU) is a compact, sealed for life metal-
enclosed switchgear widely used in Urban Power Distribution
Network.
 A Ring Main Unit includes a combination of one or more Load
Break Switch (LBS) as incoming and outgoing feeder and
Vacuum Circuit Breaker for load feeders.
 Depending on the requirement, RMU is available in different
voltage ratings and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor
installation.
 Key features of the RMU includes SF6 gas insulation, compact

and modular construction, integral protection system, fully
extendable options, and low maintenance.
Applications of RMU Advantages of RMU

Wind power plants Time and Cost Savings
Solar power plants Safety and Performance
Small industries Smart Capabilities
Hotels, office buildings, residential housing
complex, shopping centres, business centres,
hospitals, airports etc.
ABC - Aerial Bunched Cables
Aerial Bunched Cables (ABC) is a very novel concept for Over Head
Power distribution.
ABC provides higher safety and reliability, lower power losses and
ultimate system economy by reducing installation, maintenance and
operative cost.
This system is ideal for rural distribution and especially attractive for
installation in difficult terrains such as hilly areas, forest areas, coastal
areas etc.
Aerial Bunched Cables is also considered to be the best choice for
power distribution congested urban areas with narrow lanes and by – Fig 3 : 4 core XLPE (LT)
lanes.
Underground Cables
Underground cables are used for power application where it is impractical, difficult or
dangerous to use the overhead lines.
XLPE (cross-linked poly ethylene) underground cables are currently used in TP-DDL.
PILCA (paper-insulated lead covered) underground cable was used earlier in TP-DDL
distribution network but due to some disadvantages of PILCA it is replaced by XLPE
cables.
