Plants and Animals
Activity 1: Are these also Plants
• Look at the
specimen on the
right.
Q1. Is it a plant?
Q2. What is its name?
Q3. What is the reason
for your answer in
Q1?
• Look at the second
specimen on the
right.
Q4. Is it a plant?
Q5. What is its name?
Q6. What is your
reason for your
answer in Q4?
Compare the two

Q7. How are they different?

Q8. How are they alike?
Q9. Do you know of other living things like
the two above?
If so, describe these living things.
Q10. How did you know about them?
Q11. Write their names if you know them.
Observe the third specimen below:
Q12. What do you
think is it?

• Q19 (B or C.)
What do you think each is

• Q20 (D.)
Mushroom
• Fungi
• Not green, cannot make its own food
• Used as food and act as decomposers
• Some can cause diseases like Althlete’s
foot and ringworm and others are
poisonous when eaten
Green Algae
• Plant-like Protist
• Has green pigments and can make its
own food
• Some are one-celled others are
multicellular
• Used as food for man and fishes
• Some are considered pest in aquariums
and beaches or resorts

Lichens
• Partly fungus and partly algae
• The algal part can make its own food, the
fungal part cannot
• The algal part provides food for the
fungus while the fungus provides home
for the algae.
• Act as indicator of air pollution and may
act as seed bed or spore bed

Mold
• Fungi
• Has root-like, stem-like and fruit-like
parts
• Break down once living matter into
simpler components
• Responsible for the spoiled food

Bacteria
• Classified as Monerans
• Can be seen only in colonies or big numbers
• Used in making fermented products like wine,
cheese and yogurt.
• Act as decomposers
• May cause diseases like TB, diarrhea,
pneumonia, UTI, leprosy etc.

II. Stem-like parts
III. Spores
IV. Fruit like parts
A. I & II B. II & III C. I & III D. II & IV
2. Just like many living things, fungi have certain
needs to survive. What are these needs?
I. Food
II. Air & Water
III. Sunlight & Soil
IV. Water
A. I & II B. II & III C. I & III D. II & IV
3. Fungi cannot make their own food. What is
the effect of their food-getting activities?
A. Decomposition of living things
B. Production of starch
C. Trapping of solar energy
D. Release of oxygen
4. What characteristics differentiates fungi,
algae and bacteria from plants studied in
Grades 3-6 aside from their small size?
A. They do not have true roots, true leaves, true
stems, fruits and flowers.
B. Most do not make their own food unlike
plants.
C. They are at the base of the food chain while
animals are at the top.
D. They cause diseases while plants and animals
have many uses.
