CONTEXT
■ Marcelo Hilario Del Pilar y Gatmaitan
– Born on August 30, 1850 in Cupang
(now Barangay San Nicolas), Bulakan, Bulacan
to Julian Hilario del Pilar (a three- time
gobernadorcillo) and Blasa Gatmaitan (descendant of ancient
Tagalog nobility)
– Studied at Colegio de San Juan de Letran then University of Santo
Tomas where he got his law degree in 1880

– Founded Diariong Tagalog to propagate
democratic liberal ideas to the common people
– Became the editor, succeeding after Graciano
Lopez Jaena, and co- publisher of La

– His propaganda was deemed very effective since he used simple,
yet forceful Tagalog
– Most feared by the Spaniards due to the effectiveness of his
propaganda and was described by Governor- General Ramon
Blanco as “the most intelligent of the Filipino politicians, the true
soul of the independence movement, very superior to Rizal”
– Died on July 4, 1896 due to tuberculosis in Barcelona, Spain
– Father of Philippine Masonry

- Marcelo H. Del Pilar was, together with
Mariano Ponce and Jose Rizal, part of the
triumvirate that led the so-called Propaganda
Movement in Spain
- as editor of La Solidaridad he exposed
the ills of Spanish colonial rule in the
Philippines, up to its last issue in 1896
- mock catechism and prayer book,
entitled Dasalan at Tocsohan

The poems and prayers ridiculed and sanctimoniousness of the friars which
exposed their venalities. The method used was sacrilegious, but propaganda wise.
– John N. Shumacher’s The Propaganda Movement 1880-1895 (1997)
Stated that even though displaying its authors’ mastery of Tagalog language which
can be understand by the many, the prayers are crude to the friars and of their
religion.
– Jose P. Santos’ Buhay at mga Sinulat ni Plaridel (1931)
The writings about the passions and catechisms were made as a mockery to the
friars.

- The parody made huge propaganda to the Filipinos during its time where
friars took advantage of their superiority to the people.
- Helped overthrow “Friarocracy” in the country
- Marcelo H. Del Pilar was the most feared Filipino by the Spaniards

■ Material’s relevance at present


- Gregorio H. Del Pilar made himself known for making parody criticisms.
- One example is when someone used “aba guinoong barya” to criticize our
former President Gloria Arroyo and also former President Benigno Aquino III.
- This method of criticism is effective for Filipinos because it matches our trait
of being joyful.
