CONTEXT
■ Marcelo Hilario Del Pilar y Gatmaitan
– Born on August 30, 1850 in Cupang
(now Barangay San Nicolas), Bulakan, Bulacan
to Julian Hilario del Pilar (a three- time
gobernadorcillo) and Blasa Gatmaitan (descendant of ancient
Tagalog nobility)
– Studied at Colegio de San Juan de Letran then University of Santo
Tomas where he got his law degree in 1880

– Written in 1887-1888 during the Propaganda Movement
– To expose the abuses of the friars, he parodied Spanish Creeds
and prayers
– Published like the Catholic Novenas (formatted as pamphlets)
with the help of Pedro Serrano Laktaw

■ MAIN ARGUMENT OR THESIS
- Marcelo H. Del Pilar was, together with
Mariano Ponce and Jose Rizal, part of the
triumvirate that led the so-called Propaganda
Movement in Spain
- as editor of La Solidaridad he exposed
the ills of Spanish colonial rule in the
Philippines, up to its last issue in 1896
- mock catechism and prayer book,
entitled Dasalan at Tocsohan
