By Diti Abrol
Roll no 11
•Any visible or invisible particle or gas
found in the air that is not part of the
original, normal composition.
Natural: forest fires, pollen, dust
storm

Unnatural: man-made; coal, wood

and other fuels used in cars, homes,
and factories for energy
AQI: Air Quality Index
•Indicates whether pollutant levels in air may cause
health concerns.
•Ranges from 0 (least concern) to 500 (greatest
concern)
Gurugram air quality as on
20/06/2019
Why pollution higher in Gurugram?
• Vehicular emissions are higher as no restriction
on diesel vehicles and no law requiring CNG
vehicles.
• High dependence on Diesel generators.
• Dust storm from west and north west. ( include
paddy burring in neighboring states)
Hazardous effects of air pollution
Our physical and psychological wellbeing is
affected differently by the kind of air pollution we
are exposed to. There are many organs and bodily
functions that can be harmed, the consequences
including:
• Respiratory diseases
• Cardiovascular damage
• Fatigue, headaches and anxiety
• Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat
Hazardous effects of air pollution
• Harm to the liver
• spleen and blood

Nervous system damage. Urban populations are

more exposed to suffer the effects of air pollution
and, in this context, people who are already ill are
particularly vulnerable, as are children and the
elderly.

Air pollutions impacts most :
Children are likely to be more vulnerable to exposure
to air pollution compared to adults for the following
reasons:
Their lungs are still growing and developing
Their immune and metabolic systems are still
developing
They suffer from frequent respiratory infections
They are more active outdoors than adults and
therefore breathe in higher doses of outdoor
pollutant
Some children are especially vulnerable. This
includes children with underlying chronic lung
conditions such as asthma and cystic fibrosis.
Air pollutions impacts most :
Unborn babies (pregnant women): long exposure
can lead to reduced birth weight or preterm birth.

Older adults: Older people are more likely to be

affected by air pollution, perhaps due to generally
weaker immune systems, or undiagnosed
respiratory or cardiovascular health conditions. As
people age, their bodies are less able to
compensate for the effects of environmental
hazards. Air pollution can aggravate heart disease
and stroke, lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis
(also called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
or COPD) and asthma
Effect on academics
• Lesser attendance due to health issues
• Low cognitive ability
• More harm to language ability
