AND ADVERBS
POSITION
What is an adjective?
• It’s a word that describes someone or something,
and it usually goes directly before the noun.
That’s a slow car. He is a careful driver.

What is an adverb?
• Adverbs are used to modify verbs, adjectives and other
adverbs. It usually goes after the main verb in a sentence
but they vary.
That’s car goes slowly. He drives carefully.
The position of adverbs
varies
• They may go at the beginning of a sentence, in the
middle of a sentence or at the end of a sentence.
Adverbs at the beginning
of a sentence
1. CONNECTING ADVERBS: which are the ones in
charged of joining sentences to what came before.
EX: Nevertheless, Then, however

• I went to Peru. However, I only stayed there 2 days.

• She studied French first. Then, she studied in


Canada.
• We're having difficulties with the project.
Nevertheless, we'll finish on time.
2. TIME ADVERBS: Only when the adverb is not the
focus of the message.

Ex: Last year, in the past, tomorrow.

• Last year, I bought my car.

• Tomorrow, I'll help you with your stuff .


Adverbs in the middle of
a sentence
1. ADVERBS OF CERTAINTY AND PROBABILITY: they
usually go in the middle or before the main verb.

EX: Probably, definitely, fully, nearly, totally.

• I will definitely study a new career.

• She nearly had an accident.


2. ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY: they usually go in the middle
or before the main verb.

EX: Sometimes, usually, always, never.

• I have always wanted to go to Brazil.

• I Usually spend time with my friends.


3. ADVERBS OF COMMENT: they usually go before the
main verb.

EX: Stupidly, ignorantly, truly.

• I truly disagree with what you said.

• I think she stupidly missed her opportunity.


Adverb at the end of a
sentence
1. ADVERBS OF MANNER: they usually go at the end of
a sentence.

• She walks slowly.

• They accepted the proposal happily.

• He speaks Chinese well.


2. ADVERBS OF PLACE they usually go at the end of
the sentence.

EX: Upstairs, around the world, in the corner, back home.

• You can find the bathroom upstairs.

• She has been travelling around the world.

• I already memorized the way back home.


3. ADVERBS OF TIME When the time expression is the
focus of the message. And they usually go at the end
of the sentence.
EX: This morning, a while ago, today.

• I studied Portuguese a while ago.

• She took the exam this morning.

• I leave the country today.
