Role

of
Civil Engineers
Introduction

 What is Civil Engineering ?

 Civil engineering is a professional engineering
discipline that deals with the design, construction,
and maintenance of the physical and naturally built
environment, including works like roads, bridges,
canals, dams, and buildings.
 Civil engineering is the second-oldest engineering
discipline after military engineering, and it is defined
to distinguish non-military engineering from military
engineering.
Civil - Engineer

What is Civil

Related to citizen, society

What is engineer?

The person with the knowledge of

Science & mathematics with inventive Skill
who develops Solution for technical problems.
Role of Civil Engineers
 Role of Civil Engineers can be explaind in two
ways:

1) Phase-I : Design and estimation

2) Phase-II: Construction, Project Planning &

Scheduling
Civil Engineering is Everywhere

Civil Engineering is a
composite of many
specific disciplines that
include structural
engineering, water
engineering, waste
material management and
engineering, foundation

Why?
about engineering many.
Phase-I : Design and estimation

 Preparation of Layout of open plot by Surveying and Leveling

 Finding the foundation detail by Geotechnical Engineering.

 Preparation of Structure design and estimation by structural Engineering.

 Finding out the possibility of source of water and convey it by Water

resources as well as Fluid Engineering.

 Construction of roads, rail, tunnel, bridge, Airport, harbours by the

Transportation Engineering

 Construction of water treatment plant, waste water treatment plant, water

distribution system and sewerage by Environmental Engineering.
Phase-II: Construction, Project Planning
& Scheduling
1. Approval of plan

2. Testing, Supervision and execution of material

3. Special attention to quality control during erection.

4. Designs machine foundation

5. Design cabling, wiring, transformers

6. Design of a fire fighting system

7. Solve the disputes solve at site

Thus, Civil Engineers play’s role in
Design,
Construction,
Maintenance,
Demolition,
Disaster of buildings
&
Infrastructure like:
Roads, bridges, Canals, Dams…more

Civil Engineering plays major role on ECONOMY

of the Nation.
There are many branches of civil engineering like……..

Surveying & Leveling
Surveying & Leveling

 Surveying or land surveying is the technique, profession,

and science of determining the terrestrial or three-
dimensional position of points and the distances and
angles between them. A land surveying professional is
called a land surveyor.
 They use equipment like total stations, robotic total
stations, GPS receivers, retro reflectors, 3D scanners,
radios, digital levels, theodolites and surveying software.
 Leveling is a branch of surveying, the object of which is
used take measurements of elevation or heights.
Structural Engineering
Structural Engineering

 Structural engineers are most commonly involved in

non building structures, as well as building
structures.
 Structural engineers are responsible for engineering
design and analysis.
 Structural engineers analyze, design, plan, and
research structural components and structural
systems to achieve design goals and ensure the safety
and comfort of users or occupants.
Fluid Engineering
Fluid Engineering

It is divided in two parts.

Static Kinematics

The Study of Fluid at rest The Study of Fluid at motion

Hydraulic engineering as a sub-discipline of civil

engineering is concerned with the flow and conveyance of
fluids, principally water and sewage.
Geotechnical Engineering

Penetrometer
Geotechnical Engineering

 Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil

engineering concerned with the engineering
behavior of earth materials.
 Geotechnical engineering is important in civil
engineering, but also has applications in military,
mining, petroleum and other engineering disciplines
that are concerned with construction occurring on
the surface or within the ground.
Transportation Engineering
Transportation Engineering

 Transportation engineering or transport engineering

is the application of technology and scientific
principles to the planning, functional design and
operation in order to provide for the safe, efficient,
rapid, comfortable and economical.
 Engineering related to roads, waterways, airways
and railways are included in this branch of civil
engineering.
Environmental Engineering
Environmental Engineering

 Environmental Engineering is the branch of engineering

concerned with the application of engineering principles for:

1. protection of human populations from the effects of adverse

environmental factors;
2. protection of environments, both local and global, from the
potentially deleterious effects of natural and human activities;
3. improvement of environmental quality.
Material Engineering
Material Engineering

 The interdisciplinary field of materials science,

engineering, involves the discovery and design of
new materials, with an emphasis on solids.
 It is an engineering to unde5rstand ancient,
phenomenological observations in metallurgy and
mineralogy.
 In civil engineering it deals with the materials like
cement, bricks, types of soils, etc.
