Aim:

The aim of project is to Increase ground

water level and reduce waterlogging by
using polymer modified binder and
geotextile for heavy traffic.

Savitribai Phule Pune University 2018 17 September 2019 4

Objectives
• To study porous pavement
• To develop a permeable pavement
• Utilization of polymer modified binder material for
strength recovery.
• To give enough strength to provide porous asphalt
pavement for heavy traffic.
• Utilization of Geotextile to increase shear strength

What is porous asphalt
• Porous asphalt is an environmentally friendly tool for
storm water management.
• When it pores, its porous “porous asphalt
pavements offers developers and planners a new
tool in their toolbox for managing storm water.
These pavements, used mostly for parking lots, allow
water to drain through the pavement surface into a
stone recharge bed and infiltrate into the soils
below the pavement.

Savitribai Phule Pune University 2018 17 September 2019 6

Porous material
• A porous medium or a porous material is a
material containing pores (voids). The skeletal
portion of the material is often called the "matrix"
or "frame". The pores are typically filled with a
fluid (liquid or gas).
• A porous medium is most often characterised by
its porosity.
• Many natural substances such as rocks and soil
(e.g., aquifers, petroleum reservoirs), zeolites,
biological tissues (e.g. bones, wood, cork), and
man made materials such as cements and
ceramics can be considered as porous media.

Asphalt
• Asphalt, also known as bitumen, is a sticky, black,
and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of
petroleum. It may be found in natural deposits or
may be a refined product, and is classed as a pitch.
Before the 20th century.

Savitribai Phule Pune University 2018 17 September 2019 8

Asphalt—environmentally friendly,
sustainable pavement material
• From the production of the paving material, to the
placement of the pavement on the road, to
rehabilitation, through recycling, asphalt
pavements minimize impact on the environment.
The low consumption of energy for production and
construction, low emission of greenhouse gases,
and conservation of natural resources help to make
asphalt the environmental pavement of choice.

Literature review
Author Year Description

06 June 2018 The purpose of this paper is

Mr.G.N.Chavanpatil1. to study the durability,
and Mr. S.S. Chokakkar maintenance requirements,
hydrologic benefits, and
environmental
considerations of a full-
depth porous asphalt (PA)
pavement, installed on a
low-volume roadway. This
paper includes the design,
construction, and
performance of porous
asphalt.

Author Year Description

This study represent the

Dr. A. M. Jain and 2014 Experimental work related

feasibility . The soil also
useful in order to identify
suitability of disposal of
the seepage ground water
nearby to stream .

Shivam gupta March 6, 2010 The subgrade and sub
base soil should normally
provided a 6- 12 inch layer
of permeable sub base .
The pervious concrete
pavement is critical to
design a long life
pavement .

Permeable pavements are

Dr. B V Kiran Kumar, Manjunatha September of various types which
S, Shiva Prasad N. 2014 include porous asphalt,
pervious concrete, inter-
locking concrete block
pavers, turf reinforcing
grids, decks, open graded
aggregates and soft
paving materials such as
wood mulch.

Case study
• Jaipur devlopment authority made POROUS
ASPHALT PAVEMENT in area of Gandhi Nagar
Railway Station & Sitapura institutional area.
• It is first ever porous asphalt pavement constructed
in India for rainwater harvesting
• It is observed that this pavement increases the
Ground water level upto 2 lakhs Liter per year
