BOOKS AND BECAME FAMOUS IN THE 1980S AS THE THEORIST OF POSTMODERNISM. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 21, 1939, Charles Alexander Jencks was the son of composer Gardner Platt Jencks and Ruth DeWitt Pearl. Attended Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature at Harvard University in 1961 and a Master of Arts degree in Architecture from Harvard School of Design in 1965. In 1970 Jencks received a PhD in architectural history, studying under the radical modernist Reyner Banham at University College, London. This thesis was the source for his Modern Movements in Architecture(1973) which criticised the suppression of some Modernist variations. AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS SECOND WIFE MAGGIE KESWICK JENCKS DIED IN1995, JENCKS HELPED CO- FOUND MAGGIE’S CANCER CENTRES. GARDEN OF COSMIC SPECULATION, SCOTLAND EARTHWORKS AT JUPITER ARTLAND CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE PARK AN DART GALLERY IN WEST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND. CRAWICK MULTIVERSE BRITAIN. THE GODDESS OF THE NORTH GARDEN OF COSMIC SPECULATION, SCOTLAND •GARDEN IS INSPIRED BY MODERN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS, WITH SCULPTURES AND LANDSCAPING ON THESE THEMES SUCH AS BLACK HOLES AND FRACTALS.COMBINES WITH NATURAL FEATURES AND ARTIFICIAL SYMMETRY AND CURVES.
-BASED ON THE SELF HELPAND THE FACT
THAT THE CANCER PATIENTS ARE OFTEN INVOLVED IN LONG DRAWN OUT STRUGGLE, THE CENTRES PROVIDE SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HELP IN AN ATTRACTIVE SETTING NEXT TO LARGE HOSPITALS. THEIR ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE, AND ART ARE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT BOTH PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS AND TO GIVE DIGNITY TO THOSE WHO, IN THE PAST, OFTEN HIDE THEIR DISEASE. JENCKS SWITCHED TO LANDSCAPE DESIGN AS A SITE FOR SYMBOLIC EXPLORATION WHEN MAGGIE ASKED CHARLES TO DESIGN IN THE FAMILY HOME AND GARDEN IN SCOTLAND. THE RESULT IN 2003 WAS THE GARDEN OF COSMIC SPECULATION, A SERIES OF TWEMTY AREAS DESIGNED AROUND VARIOUS METAPHORS SUCH AS THE DNA GARDEN, QUARK WALK, FRACTAL TERRACE AND COMET BRIDGE.
Further hybrid landforms and
symbolic sculptures were built in Edinburgh, Milan, Long Island , Cambridge, Suncheon South Korea(with Lily Jencks), and other countries, some of which was published in The Universe in The Landscape, 2011. CRAWICK MULTIVERSE JENCKS DESCRIBE IT AS “COSMIC LANDSCAPE WORTHY OF THE ANCIENTS. -LAND ART PROJECT BY CHARLES JENCKS NEAR •IT OPENED TO PUBLIC SANQUHAR, DRUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY. ON 21 JUNE 2015. -55 ACRES MAKING IT -THE CRAWICK MULTIVERSE THE LARGEST JENCKS LANDFORM USE STONE, INTHE STYLE WORKS IN BRITAIN OF THE MEGALITHIC MONUMENTS -REPRESENTS IDEAS FROM INCLUDE THE NORTH SOUTH LINE, A MODERNCOSMOLOGY 400M LONG STONE AVENUE FLANKED BY OVER 3000 BOULDERS AND TWO STONE CIRCLES ON THE TOP OF MOUNDS REPRESENTING MILKY WAY AND ANDROMA GALAXIES. 2000 BOULDERS ARE USED. IT IS CALLED THE NORTHUMBERLANDIA( THE GODDESS OF THE NORTH)OR THE LADY. COMMISSIONED BY THE UK COALMINING COMPANY, JENCKS IS CREATING TO A GIANT LAND GODDESS SCULPTURE THAT’S 112FEET HIGH AND 1300 FEET LONG. COMPLETED IN 2013, THE LARGEST HUMAN FORM SCULPTED INTO THE LANDSCAPE AND ITS MEANT FOR WALKING ON.
