INTRODUCTION

• As of now, we are living in the 21st century, it could be assumed


that as the basic necessities (food, clothing and shelter) are
important for one’s life, in the same way Internet accessibility is a
basic necessity found in each corner of the world.
• For users, a search engine is accessed through a Browser on the
computer, smartphone, tablet, or another device.
HISTORY OF SEARCH ENGINES
Before search engines were developed, the internet was a collection of FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sites in
which users would navigate to find specific shared files. Search engines began due to the appearance of
WWW (World Wide Web) with a view to more easily navigate the web servers and files on the internet.
 The first search engine was Archie (1990) , developed as school project by Alan Emtage ,a student at
McGill University in Montreal.
 In 1991 , Mark McCahill , a student at the University of Minnesota , designed the text based search engine
– Gopher
 In 1993 , Matthew Gray developed Wandex , the first search engine in the form that we know search
SEARCH ENGINE-DEFINITIONS

 A search engine is a software program or script available


through the internet that searches documents and files
for keywords and returns the results of any files
containing those keywords.
 An internet search engine is a service that searches the
internet for specific items, following terms specified by
a user. The items retrieved may be texts , images, audio
files or video files.
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION
(SEO)
oThe process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular
website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results
returned by a search engine.

oCompanies look to SEO to help gain more awareness and to make their
company higher in the rank of a search engine. SEO is utilised through
search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, Bing, etc. SEO uses
keywords that attract a user to the company.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES
1. GOOGLE

 Today, the most popular, well-known and widely used search


engine is none other than Google.
 “According to the latest netmarketshare report (November 2018)
73% of researches were powered by Google and only 7.91% by Bing.”
 Google was founded on September 4, 1998 by Larry Page and
Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University,
California.

Reasons--- Why Goole is popular?


• Its Homepage is very simple, easy to use and loads quickly.
• It provides better results than any other search engines.
• It finds lot of information quickly.
2. BING

Globally, Bing is still the second biggest


search engine after Google.
It is the Microsoft’s attempt to challenge
Google in search.
Their search engine market share is
constantly below 10%.
It was launched on 1 June 2009.
3. YAHOO

 David Filo and Jerry Yang started Yahoo in January


1994 and was incorporated on March 2,1995.
 Yahoo was one of the pioneers of the early Internet era
in the 1990’s.
 It shares 7.78 % in world market share.
 It is one of the world’s popular email providers.
 In 2003, yahoo purchased AltaVista (1995) for $140
million. Thus AltaVista became Yahoo with is purchase.
4. BAIDU

 Baidu was founded in 2000 in


Beijing, China.
 Its market share in the world is about
7.14 %.
 Baidu is serving billion of search
queries per month. It is currently
ranked at position 4, in the Alexa
ranking.
5. ASK.COM

 Formerly known as Ask Jeeves ,


Ask.Com receives approximately 0.42 %
of the search share.
 It was founded in 1996 by Garrett
Gruener and David Warthen in Berkeley,
California.
 It is based on a question/answer format
where most questions are answered by
other users.
6. AOL.COM

 The old time famous AOL is still in the top 10


search engines with a market share that is close
to 0.15 % .
 It purchased WebCrawler in 1995.
 It helps you find exactly what you’re looking for.
You can find the most relevant information such
as images, videos, answer to many questions
etc.
7. YANDEX .RU

Yandex is to Russia as Baidu is to


China. More than 53 % of Russian
people uses this search engine.

It was founded in 2000 by Arkady


Volozh, Arkady Berkovsky and Ilya
Segalovich.
8. DUCKDUCKGO

 It was founded in 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg. The


Headquarter of this search engine is in Paoli,
Pennsylvania ,U.S
 Has a number of advantages over the other search
engines.
 It has a clear interface.
 It does not track users and emphasises on
protecting searcher’s privacy.
 It is not fully loaded with ads and has a number of
very nice features.
HOW SEARCH ENGINES WORK?

Search engine is a software program designed to identify and respond to specific questions, called keywords
and populate the page called as SERP (Search Engine Results Page) with relevant information available on
the web.
 Crawl- Content is discovered.

 Indexing- Content is analysed and stored in a database.

 Search Results – User query is fetched and displayed.


CONCLUSION
 The goal of all search engines is to find and organise
distributed data found on the internet.
 A search engine continuously sends out the so-called
Spiders, which start on a homepage of a server and
pursue all links stepwise and finally displays it to the user.
