COMPOST IN A BUCKET
INTRODUCTION
• Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed in a process called
composting.

• This process cycles various organic materials otherwise regarded as waste

products and produces a soil conditioner

• The compost itself is beneficial for the land in many ways including as a soil
conditioner , fertilizer, humus

• The process of composting requires making a heap of wet organic matter

What is “compost” and ”composting”???
 Compost is the aerobically decomposed remnants of organic materials.
Compost is used in gardening and agriculture as a soil amendment, and
commercially by the landscaping and container nursery industries.

 Composting is the process of producing compost through aerobic

decomposition of biodegradable organic matter.
SOURCES OF ORGANIC WASTE

HOTEL WASTE KITCHEN WASTE

MARKET WASTE GARDEN TRIMMINGS

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
• The overall objective of this project is to demonstrate the
ability of in vessel composting and let it serve as
educational opportunity given the small scale nature of
project .while it will save money and generate income , it is
not expected to be a fully fledged business but rather a
pilot project. The intend is the next stage of the project
would develop a large scale composting 5facilty that
could be opted through strainer sanitation.
METHODOLOGY
• Firstly take a barrel/container that must be made of plastic & make holes on it to
circulate the air.
• Now Segregate the waste at home.
• It can be also used in non usable land.
• Use the composting materials such as Grasses Twigs Kitchen Scraps e.g fruits &
vegetables ,Wasted papers
• Now place the dry waste materials in the first layer.
• Next layer should of green materials like kitchen scraps.
• Remember try to chop the wastes like twigs ,papers etc , into small
pieces.
• After that you can also put animal manure & put compost/soil/ash
• Repeat these until your pile reaches about the height you have dug or
the height of your barrel.
METHODS CONTINUE……
• Be sure to make holes into the container to allow the air to
circulate into the various layers.
• Now cover the pile with carpet scraps ,plastic sheet etc.
• Now turn the pile after every two weeks.
• The compost will be ready for usage after 2 to 3 months.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF
COMPOSTING
• It builds good soil structure.
• Enables soil to retain nutrients.
• Increases water holding capacity.
• Reduces soil erosion .
• Maintains the neutrality of PH.
• Drastically reduces the need of fertilizers &pesticides.
• Avoids methane production.
• Protects ground water quality.
• Protects plant from many diseases.
ANALYSIS OF DATA ….
• By asking to people we came to know that most of the
biodegradable are dumped in the dumpyards or thrown
in dustbins. Without throwing them here and there we
can make use of them to make good manure and fertile
soil for the plant instead of using chemical fertilizers. We
have also came to know that composting in optimal
condition and presence of micro-organism makes the
composting process even faster.
OUTCOMES
• This was a very interesting project work on. We came to know many things
about the composting . We came to that composting is done in a place where
sunlight can reach properly and the soil must contain little amount of
moisture in it. We also came to know that we must cover our face with mask
while observing the compost because while decomposing of peals the nitrogen
gas is released which is harmfull . We also came to know that composting in
the presence of micro-organism and earthworms yields faster and efficient
results. The soil which was therefore prepared was very fertile
RESULTS

Making people aware about organic farming, to use compost and positive effects of
biodegradable waste on environment. Industrial compost operations will produce
negligible green house gas emission. Using this can reduce the use of pesticides and
fertilizers. It is cheap method. The overall outcome compared to Artificial fertilizers
and pesticides is much better .
