XII SCIENCE 2
The word “before” belongs to one type of
word, namely conjunction. The conjunctive word
itself has a function that is to connect between one
simple sentence with another simple sentence so
that it becomes a complex sentence that makes
sense.
Simple Sentence is a simple sentence that only
consists of one clause and there are only subjects and
predicates.

subject + verb + She study hardly

complement

subject + verb My mother buys some

+ object fruits
Complex Sentence is a sentence consisting
of two clauses, namely the main sentence (main
clause / independent clause) and the clause
(dependent clause).For Example:
1. My friend and her husband had met twice
before they got married
2. She knows that news before you give her the
information about that important news
3. Before I came to my friend’s house for dinner,
I went to a florist to buy a beautiful flower for
her
“Before” in English it can be used in
complex sentences that contain two events or
events. The first type of event is the event that
happened earlier (the earlier event), and the
second type of event is the event that occurred
after the first event (later event).
The word “before” is used when we want to
state that an event, namely the earlier event
occurred before the second event occurred (later
event).
Earlier event (main clause) + before + later
event (dependent clause)
Or
Before + Earlier event (main clause) + later
event (dependent clause)

Examples of before use in sentences:

• We had met once before we went abroad
• Before i go to sleep, i drink a glass of mineral
water
RULES REGARDING TENSES IN “BEFORE”
USE
1. First rule(Focus on The Occurence)
The time between two related past activities
is shown with past tense verbs on main clause and
dependent clause. Below is an example of the
application of the first rule in the sentence:
• Larry and Enny made popcorn before their
parents arrived
2. Second rule(Focus on The Earlier-Later
Timing)
This last rule stipulates that a difference
between the time of both events can be indicated
by a past tense verb in main clause and a past
perfect verb in dependent clause. The use of past
perfect is optional to emphasize differences in
timing. The following is an example of the
application of the second rule in a sentence:
• Larry and Enny had made popcorn before their
parents arrived
