GRAMMAR RECOGNITION ERRORS AND FACTORS
AFFECTING THE WRITING SKILLS OF GRADE
SEVEN STUDENTS AT WENCESLAO
TRINIDAD NATIONAL HIGHSCHOOL:
BASIS FOR WRITING SKILLS
DEVELOPMENT MODULE
Writing is one of the most challenging language skills in second language learning. In fact, even for those
who speak English as a first language, the ability to write requires long, intensive and specialized instruction. Errors
in writing can affect not just the form but communication as well. It has been identified as one of the essential skills
in a world that is more than ever driven by text and numerical data.
Part of the writing skill is the mastery of basic principles in grammar. If the students know these, it
would be easy for them to construct compositions even a simple sentence. But, writing is still a complex intellectual
task involving many component skills, some of which students may lack completely, some of which they may have
only partially mastered.
Looking at the status quo, students are poorly prepared to write, and being neglected by most of them.
In fact, they consider this skill as a hard one which results to poor in writing. Most of the students don’t construct
an essay even a sentence if the activity is writing. For them, writing is an inescapable failure. Lack of writing skills in
different areas, may be unsatisfactory in multiple ways – from poor grammar and weak reasoning and arguments.
Complicating matters are the facts that many students’ reading skills are also poor. For example, if they cannot
recognize the main point of an argument in their reading, they obviously cannot respond to this point in their
writing. In addition, students often lack the meta-cognitive skills to recognize the areas in which their prior
knowledge and skills are insufficient – and thus which skills they need to work to improve. They often get low
marks when doing the tests on writing skill and it affect their learning’s result. In fact, students often have many
basic mistakes in written works about grammar and etc.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The main objective of this study is to identify the perceived factors that affect the writing skills and the most
common grammatical errors in the written compositions of the grade 7 students of Wenceslao Trinidad National
High School. Specifically, this sought to answer the following questions:
1. What are the factors affecting writing skills of the students?
2. What is the most common grammatical error committed by the students
based on their written composition?
3. Based on the findings of the study, what module can be proposed to
develop students’ writing skills?
