How common is HPV?

HPV is so common
Much more common that nearly all sexually-active men
than most people and women will get at least one
think…

Cervical Cancer CAN happen to you
• Cancer of the cervix – the lower part of the uterus
that connects to the vagina
• More than 6,000 Filipino women are diagnosed
annually1
• More than half will die within 5 years
• Approximately 7 Filipino women die every day1
• Most are diagnosed late; seen in the late stages
• Cost of treatment: Php150,000 – 500,0002

It’s not too early to think about cervical cancer.

While most women develop cervical cancer later in life (35-
55 years), many of them may have acquired the virus in
their youth. www.helpfighthpv.com

What are the consequences?

For most people, HPV is cleared by the

body’s defense system. Over 80% HPV
infections are transient, asymptomatic
and resolve spontaneously.2,5–7

However, some people may not clear

the virus and the consequences depend
on the type of HPV involved.

Beyond the Numbers
THE BURDEN OF DISEASE CAUSED BY HPV1-4

• Anxiety
• Negative self-image
• Financial burden
• Social isolation
• Fear of Cancer

What are the symptoms of HPV infection?

• Genital warts – cauliflower-like lesions in the genital

areas
• Pre-cancerous – lesions – may have no symptoms
• Cervical cancer – early stage may present with
abnormal spotting, bleeding or foul-smelling
discharge. Later in the disease, this may be
associated with pain, difficulty in urination or bowel
movements.

Doctor Consult
An important thing to
remember is that the
chances of recovery are
better when the cancer is
found early.

Even if you get

vaccinated with the HPV
vaccine, it will not replace
regular
your

pap smear. www.helpfighthpv.com

Vaccination against HPV-
Related Cancers and Diseases

www.helpfighthpv.com 25
What HPV vaccines are available?

• There are three kinds of HPV vaccines licensed by the

Philippine Food and Drug Authority:
– The NONAVALENT HPV (9vHPV) vaccine which offers protection
against HPV diseases caused by HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52
and 58 – for both males and females 9 years onwards
– The QUADRIVALENT HPV (qHPV) vaccine which offers protection
against HPV diseases caused by HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 – for both
males and females
– The BIVALENT HPV (bHPV) vaccine which offers protection against
HPV diseases caused by HPV 16 and 18 – only for females
– Either vaccine entails 3 doses within 6 months
– For adolescents: can be given in 2-dose regimens

www.helpfighthpv.com
26
Why is HPV vaccination important?

In the absence of
vaccination, it is
estimated that the
majority of sexually
active people will catch
HPV during their lifetime.

Many people who have

HPV may not show any
signs or symptoms. This
means that they can
pass on the virus to
others without knowing
it.
www.helpfighthpv.com
27
Who should NOT receive the HPV vaccine?
Anyone who:
• is allergic to any of the
ingredients in the
vaccine (including any
of the ingredients listed
under inactive
ingredients)

• has an allergic reaction

after receiving a dose
of the vaccine

• Fever >38.5

www.helpfighthpv.com
28
Why is vaccination at a young age
recommended?

HPV vaccination is most

effective when given during
childhood or adolescence, i.e.
before sexual debut, when
HPV infection risk is nil or at its
lowest.

Vaccination at a young age is

also ideal because this is when
the immune system is at its
strongest and, therefore, will
mount a robust response to
the vaccine.
