PERFORMING ARTS, GRAPHIC AND

PLASTIC ARTS
(Contemporary Arts from the Region)
PERFORMING ARTS
 are a form of art in which artists use their voices, bodies or inanimate objects
to convey artistic expression. It is different from visual arts, which is when
artists use paint, canvas or various materials to create physical or static art
objects. Performing arts include a range of disciplines which are performed in
front of a live audience.
 Theatre, music, dance and object manipulation, and other kinds
of performances are present in all human cultures. The history of
music and dance date to pre-historic times whereas circus skills date to at
least Ancient Egypt. Many performing arts are performed professionally.
Performance can be in purpose built buildings, such as theatres and opera
houses, on open air stages at festivals, on stages in tents such as circuses and
on the street.

GRAPHIC ARTS
 Graphic art covers a broad range of visual artistic expression, typically
two-dimensional, i.e. produced on a flat surface. The term usually refers to
the arts that rely more on line or tone than on colour,
especially drawing and the various forms of engraving; it is sometimes
understood to refer specifically to printmaking processes, such as line
engraving, aquatint, drypoint, etching, mezzotint, monotype, lithography,
and screen printing (silk-screen, serigraphy). Graphic art further
includes calligraphy, photography, painting, typography, computer graphics,
and bindery. It also encompasses drawn plans and layouts for interior and
architectural designs
Graphic Design Software
Graphic artists applying for positions in today's job market are expected to be familiar with
computers and a variety of software programs in order to create the most appealing, up to date
designs. Graphic art software includes applications such as:
1. Adobe Dreamweaver – a tool that facilitates the creation of webpages and dynamic internet
content
2. Adobe Illustrator – a software application that allows artists to manipulate vector graphics
3. Adobe InDesign – desktop publishing software used for layout and design manipulation
4. Adobe Photoshop – a bitmap graphics software including powerful graphics editing tools that
provide a large variety of editing functionality
5. CorelDRAW – similar to Adobe Illustrator, it is another vector graphic manipulation tool
6. PhotoImpact – a digital photograph editor
7. QuarkXPress – similar to Adobe InDesign, it is another computer publishing software tool
Free Software
1. Paint.net – photograph editing capabilities with lots of
plugins to expand use
2. GIMP – similar to paint.net and Photoshop
3. Inkscape – similar to Illustrator
History
Throughout history, technological inventions have shaped the development of graphic
art. In 2500 BC, the Egyptians used graphic symbols to communicate their thoughts in a
written form known as hieroglyphics. The Egyptians wrote and illustrated narratives on
rolls of papyrus to share the stories and art with others.
During the Middle Ages, scribes manually copied each individual page of manuscripts to
maintain their sacred teachings. The scribes would leave marked sections of the page
available for artists to insert drawings and decorations. Johannes Gutenberg invented an
improved movable type mechanical device known as the printing press in 1450, the first
outside of Asia.
During the Renaissance years, graphic art in the form of printing played a major role in
the spread of classical learning in Europe. Within these manuscripts, book designers focused
heavily on typeface. Due to the development of larger fonts during the Industrial
Revolution, posters became a popular form of graphic art used to communicate the latest
information as well as to advertise the latest products and services.
The next major change in graphic arts came when the
personal computer was invented in the twentieth century. Powerful
computer software enables artists to manipulate images in a much
faster and simpler way than the skills of board artists prior to the
1990s. With quick calculations, computers easily recolor, scale, rotate,
and rearrange images if the programs are known.
PLASTIC ARTS
Plastic arts are art forms which involve physical manipulation of a plastic
medium by molding or modeling such as sculpture or ceramics. Less often the
term may be used broadly for all the visual arts (such as painting, sculpture,
film and photography), as opposed to literature and music. Materials for use in
the plastic arts, in the narrower definition, include those that can be carved or
shaped, such as stone or wood, concrete, glass, or metal.
The term "plastic" has been used to mean certain synthetic organic resins
ever since they were invented, but the term "plastic arts" long preceded them.
The term should not be confused, either, with Piet Mondrian's concept of
"Neoplasticism".
'Plastic' and the Philosophy of Art
In contrast to the limiting of 'plastic arts' to sculpture and architecture
by Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling in 1807, the German critic August
Wilhelm Schlegel (1767-1845) applied the concept not only to visual arts, but
also poetry. Classical poetry lines he saw utilizing plastic isolation, and rhyme
falling under the Romantic (domain).
In Schlegel's Viennese lectures (1809-1811), published in 1827 as On the Theory
and History of the Plastic Arts, he contrasted the plasticism of Classical Art with
picturesque Romanticism. He "operated with the antinomy of terms
plastic/pictorial, mechanically/ organically, finite/ infinite, and
closed/accomplished. Schlegel stated that the spirit of the entire antique culture
and poetry was plastic and that the spirit of modern culture, however, was
picturesque (pittoresk)".
