COMMUNICATION MODELS

Prepared by:
Hannah Marie Fe Marfil de la Cruz, LPT
WHAT IS A MODEL

• is widely used to depict any idea, thought or a concept in a

more simpler way through diagrams, pictorial
representations etc. Models go a long way in making the
understanding of any concept easy and clear. Through a
model one can easily understand a process and draw
conclusions from it. In simpler words a model makes the
learning simple.
WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW
COMMUNICATIONS MODEL?

• To realize the importance because they will

help you understand how communication
works. It is only by knowing the flow of
communication that you will be able to make
the communication process effective.
ancient Greek

ARISTOTLE (384—322 B.C.E.)

Aristotle is a towering figure in philosophy,
making contributions to logic, metaphysics,
mathematics, physics, biology, botany, ethics,
politics, agriculture, medicine, dance and
theatre. He was a student of Plato who in turn
studied under Socrates.
father of the field of logic, he was the first to
develop a formalized system for reasoning.
PRIMARY ELEMENTS

SPEAKER SPEECH AUDIENCE

RHETORIC
CRITICAL ELEMENTS OF A GOOD
COMMUNICATOR

•ETHOS – CREDIBILITY
•PATHOS- EMOTIONS
•LOGOS-LOGIC
EXAMPLE
CRITICISMS OF ARISTOTLE’S MODEL OF
COMMUNICATION

No concept of feedback

Model can only be used in public

speaking
• NOTE:
That the speaker variable here is very important , Without the
speaker , there will be no speech to be produced . Depending on
the profile of the audience , the speaker adjust her/his speech.

• SOME CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE AUDIENCE DEMOGRAPHICS

age, background, culture, race, religion, gender, social and
economic, status , and political orientation or inclination . Even
beliefs , views , and attitudes also play an important role when
talking about audience consideration since oftentimes , the
audience bring these with them when they decode message in
any given situation
HAROLD DWIGHT LASWELL
 Born February 13, 1902, Donnellson, Illinois,
U.S.—died December 18, 1978, New York, New
York).
 influential political scientist known for seminal
studies of power relations and of personality
and politics and for other major contributions
to contemporary behavioral political science.
He authored more than 30 books and 250
scholarly articles on diverse subjects,
including international
relations, psychoanalysis, and legal education.
LASWELL’S COMMUNICATION MODEL
SHANNON-WEAVER’S COMMUNICATION
MODEL
• Claude Elwood Shannon and Warren Weaver’s
model pf communication was introduced in 1949 , a
year after Laswell's for Bell Laboratories .
• Originally , it was conceptualized for the functioning
of the radio and television serving as a model for
technical communication and, later on, adopted in
the field of communications
• Sender : The originator of message or the information
source selects desire message
• Encoder : The transmitter which converts the message into
signals
• Note: The sender’s messages converted into signals like
waves or Binary data which is compactable to transmit the
messages through cables or satellites. For example: In
telephone the voice is converted into wave signals and it
transmits through cables
• Decoder : The reception place of the signal which converts
signals into message. A reverse process of encode
• Note : The receiver converts those binary data or waves into
message which is comfortable and understandable for receiver.
Otherwise receiver can’t receive the exact message and it will
affect the effective communication between sender and receiver
• Receiver : The destination of the message from sender
• Note : Based on the decoded message the receiver gives their
feed back to sender. If the message distracted by noise it will
affect the communication flow between sender and receiver
• Noise: The messages are transferred from encoder to
decoder through channel. During this process the messages
may distracted or affected by physical noise like horn
sounds, thunder and crowd noise or encoded signals may
distract in the channel during the transmission process
which affect the communication flow or the receiver may not
receive the correct message
• Note : The model is clearly deals with external noises only
which affect the messages or signals from external sources.
For example: If there is any problems occur in network which
directly affect the mobile phone communication or distract
the messages
• Thomson made call to his assistant “come here I want to see you”. During his call, noise
appeared (transmission error) and his assistant received “I want” only. Again Assistant asked
Thomson (feedback) “what do you want Thomson”.
• Sender : Thomson
• Encoder : Telephone (Thomson)
• Channel : Cable
• Noise : Distraction in voice
• Reception : Telephone (Assistant)
• Receiver : Assistant.
• Due to transmission error or noise, Assistant can’t able to understand Thomson’s messages.
• *The noise which affect the communication flow between them.
BERLO’S COMMUNICATION MODEL

However, it was modified later on to include NOISE SMCRN
