HISTORY OF THE PHILIPPINES

• The history of the Philippines from 1521 to

1898, also known as the Spanish colonial

arrival of Magellan in the Philippines and
during Spain financed expeditions to the
Philippine islands and then ruled them as
the Captaincy General of the Philippines within
the Spanish East Indies.

WHAT IS CULTURE?

one generation to the next.

OF THE PHILIPPINES?
BELIEFS
( PANINIWALA )
GO BACK
• Since the colonial period, Catholicism has been the
cornerstone of Filipino identity for millions in the
Philippines. Catholicism rapidly spread during the
early years of Spanish colonialism, in part due to a
lack of otherwise centralized religious institutions,
other than Islam in the south, which might have
challenged it. Its close associations with Filipino
identity have placed the Catholic Church at the
heart of nationalism, social justice, and other
movements, while at the same time has been
associated with power, elitism, and exploitation at
various points in its history.
HOLIDAYS
• 1 January – New Years Day (Bagong Taon)
• March or April – Semana Santa (Holy Week or Easter)
• 31 October to 2 November – Day of the Dead,
Araw ng mga Kaluluwa (All Souls' Day), and Todos
Los Santos (All Saints' Day) where families spend
much of the 3 days and 3 evenings visiting their
ancestral graves, showing respect and honoring
the departed relatives by feasting, decorating and
offering prayers.
• 24 December – Nochebuena (The Good night
or Christmas Eve)
• 25 December – Christmas (Pasko)
VALUES
• Initially composed of egalitarian societies, values of
pre-colonial Philippines were focused on resiliency,
creativity, respect, and acceptance. The purge on
indigenous belief systems during the Spanish era
resulted in colonially-imposed toxic masculinity,
notions that a woman must be quiet and submissive
towards men (presently known as the Maria Clara
perception), inferiority complex among the
commonfolk and children and superiority
complex among the elites and perceived adults,
backward notions on marriage and virginity,
backward notions on divorce and women's rights,
religious fanaticism and disregard for the natural
world and its wildlife.

LANGUAGE
• Finally, it is worth mentioning that the Spaniards
enriched the Filipino languages through lexicographic
studies produced by the friars. Many Spanish words
found their way into the Tagalog and Visayan languages.
The Spanish words somehow fitted into the phonetic
patterns of the Filipino languages. These Spanish
words like "mesa" (table), "adobo" (marinated cooked
food), and others are commonly used today in the
daily practical transactions of the Filipinos with each
other. Ironically, the friars came up with excellent
studies on Filipino culture and languages even as they
sought to overthrow this same culture through their
implantation of Spanish civilization.

POLITICAL
WHAT KIND OF
GOVERNANCE
DURING THE
SPANISH ERA?
• There was no legislative branch on that time since
the laws of the islands were coming from Spain.
The only laws created in the Philippines are those
who were ordered by the Governor General.
• The government on that time was lead by the
Governor General. He was considered as the
representative of Spain and the King himself. He is
the highest officer in the island and responsible
for implementing laws from the mother country.
• The provinces in the island were called as
“Encomienda” and were governed by the
“Encomienderos”, later they were replaced by the
“Alcalde Mayor”
HOW SPANIARDS
INFLUENCE OUR
GOVERNMENT?
(PRESENT)
• The Philippine government, aside from being ruled
by the friars and the governor-general from Spain,
was dominated by male servants. This patriarchy
has continued to exist nowadays even though
women are already allowed to have a government
seat but to sum up all the positions in the
government, women are only less in number.

How spaniards influence our government?

• The Philippine constitution today still contains
Spanish elements. One example is the
prohibition of the same-sex marriage. The
Philippine laws lie deeply on the religious set-ups
which is rooted during the Spanish time.

How spaniards influence our government?

• Men are portrayed as stronger than women as if
the women can never exceed the capacity of men.
This idea can also be noticed in the current ways
of enculturation of the young Filipinos.
